About Mary

I have taught English for over five years to both children and adults. One of my writing students earned over $30,000 in scholarships for graduate school as a result of his tutoring sessions with me. Another English student raised her English and Overall ACT score 5 points after about 10 weeks of lessons.

My teaching philosophy is based on the idea that learning is a series of making mistakes. I believe students ultimately must teach themselves. In the beginning it is helpful to have a teacher, but my goal is for my students to become independent.

I've worked and volunteered as a business writer and a proofreader, been a beta reader on several published fiction stories, and, as a philosophy-language major, I specialized in writing argumentative essays on topics spanning the period from ancient Greece to the modern day. I can help with reading and writing assignments for literature classes through high school and for general education requirements in college.

As a final note, I do have a credential as, and some experience with, students who have learning disabilities. I would be comfortable working with these students on specific English-related assignments, or I would be happy to refer you to a physio-neuro therapy program. This program uses physical learning exercises to reinforce the neural pathways involved in learning. These exercises apply to students with Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, and numerous other defined and undefined learning idiosyncrasies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

I have a certificate to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL), have taught students of all ages for over five years, and have worked professionally as a writer. I have a bachelor's degree in philosophy (where I wrote countless papers), and worked or volunteered for several years on periodical publications and both fiction and non-fiction published books.
