I love living in the country, but miss the teaching I did in Mesquite before retiring. I have an undergraduate degree in History for secondary education. My Master's degree is in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I taught kindergarten for two years in a private school for gifted children in Mesquite. The school closed and I began substituting at the high school where my children attended. I ended up taking a full time job teaching World History and Advanced Placement United States History. I retired in 1997 after we moved out to the country and have been doing real estate with my husband.
I am a grandmother of a five year old grandson and a one year old grand daughter who live out here next door. I love working and playing with my grandson. I always knew that I would be a teacher, although I have done other jobs. My favorite subjects are social studies and language arts, especially reading. I liked teaching reading to my kindergarten class and believe reading skills are the most important skills you need to do well in school. I feel that I am creative and like to encourage creativity and fun in learning. Most of all, I really love children of all ages. I found that that you earn respect of students by giving them respect as well. I found teaching to be really rewarding.
I have taught reading to kindergarten students and know feel a firm basis in phonics is required to be a good reader. I love to read and I think my enjoyment of reading can be taught if you give students the right types of reading material they can relate to. I also enjoy writing and do content writing for the internet, so I have to keep up on grammar rules, spelling, etc.
I like working with the elementary age group. I believe that it is extremely important that students get all the basic skills in the early years in order to succeed later. Since I have taught 4 year old to eighteen year old students, I have had a chance to see how important those basics are. Again, reading is so fundamental to educational success, that it should be emphasized in every elementary grade since you have to read for every subject. I have worked with kids of most every grade in both school and church.
I love American history and have always sought to encourage a love of the subject in my students. I believe that our country needs students who understand the lessons taught by history in order to prosper. My last teaching assignment was Advanced Placement History to seniors who were among the best scholars at the school where I taught. I prepared my students to take College Placement exams.
I hope you find something about me in this profile that will interest you in getting to know me better. I would like to help students in my area work to the best of their ability. I feel I am qualified to help them succeed in areas that they need help. I always felt I was successful as a teacher because I really cared about the outcomes of my students. I hope we get a chance to meet and work together. I love living in the country, but miss the teaching I did in Mesquite before retiring. Linda assessed Jaci and did a good job of evaluating where she is at and what she needs most. Jaci worked well with her and likes her very much.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach all grades including K-6 in Texas. I taught Kindergarten at the High Point School for Gifted Children in Mesquite for two years. I have an MS from Texas A&M Commerce in Early Childhood Education with Elementary certification. I earned that degree in 1986 when it was East Texas State University at Commerce. I subsequently taught World History and Advanced Placement United States History at Poteet High School in Mesquite. I retired in 1997.
I love to read and love to instill the love of reading in children. In my Master's degree program I had a specialty of Early Childhood Education while graduating with a MS in Elementary Education. In addition to teaching phonics and reading in kindergarten in a school for gifted children in Mesquite, I have been a reading tutor for a couple of years with Wyzant. I tutored a first grader last year and I am currently tutoring a 9th grader at Edgewood High School.
