Murray State University (Liberal Arts)
Murray State University (Master's)
Since 2010, I have gained university tutoring and classroom experience in America, Spain, and China. I have taught hundreds of students from at least 17 countries with professions and majors ranging from military to engineering to humanities. My liberal arts background allows me to support students from many different fields. The factor that sets me apart from other teachers is respect for my students' thoughts and feelings. In fact, Murray State University's ESL students recently elected me ESL Teacher of the Year (2015-2016).
Although I have diverse interests and skills, I specialize in learning and teaching languages. I speak English (native) and Spanish, and I am beginning to learn Chinese.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My qualifications and experiences are diverse. Besides my MA in TESOL, I have classroom experience with 380 university students from 17 countries. I taught English to Royal Saudi Air Force cadets with a federal contracting company. I completed an undergraduate English concentration that includes early and modern literature, creative writing, and legal writing. I have worked with the Purchase Area Writing Project to train teachers to incorporate literacy skills into diverse subject matter. I have a work history of proofreading, editing, and creating digital and printed content, including advertisements, novels, and video games.
Because most of my students are interested in taking the IELTS, I took it upon myself to learn about the exam, going above and beyond the required expertise for the MA TESOL curriculum. I am well-versed in the research propagated and used by IELTS, as well as general principles of language assessment. I regularly incorporate IELTS-preparatory materials in my writing, grammar, and conversation courses.
I have been photographing the world since 2006. I began as a stock photographer in support of graphic designers and editors. I have formal training in photojournalism from Murray State University. From 2012-2013, I did commercial photography in the camp and conference industry in Kentucky and Indiana. Since then, I have transitioned to teaching; my photographic work is for pleasure.
As a partial requirement of the BA in Liberal Arts, I completed an interdisciplinary study in visual culture that, besides the introductory course in sociology, included sociological courses in American Culture, International Violence, and Social Movements. My capstone thesis included a literature review of the field of visual sociology as well as an empirical study using qualitative methods and a range of sociological theories ("Let There Be Light: A Study in Visual Sociology").
I first tutored a student for the TOEFL exam in Spain in 2010. After two previous tries, the student was able to achieve the target score after several weeks of tutoring, and today she is a pro golfer with an undergraduate degree from a Texan university. Since then, I have administered more than a dozen institutional TOEFL exams.
