I have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, a Masters in Elementary Education, and over 25 years experience in private and public settings. And as long as I can remember I have always wanted to be an educator. My primary teaching experience has been with young learners, from Pre-Kindergarten to 1st grade. After 25 years in the classroom I decided to retire. However I did not want to stop teaching. Currently I am tutoring at risk student 5th and 6 grade students who struggle with reading.

My favorite moment in the teaching process is when the light bulb goes on and a student understands the concept I have been teaching. I call it the “Ah-hah” moment, showing the student is ready to advance. Tutoring allows the advantage of working one-on-one with a student. That advantage helps to more quickly develop that personal connection allowing students to feel safe, welcomed, and knows success can happen. This personal connection provides an environment for meaningful discussions and more thoughtful student questions. This personal relationship can be developed in the classroom. However, that relationship takes longer to develop due to the student/teacher ratio. Tutoring allows me to strengthen a student’s weaker areas and re-enforce stronger areas with which they are comfortable.

A large part of my career involved teaching students who came from low socio-economic households. They came to class with limited English and vocabulary. Part of my teaching responsibility was to help them understand and increase their vocabulary. Increased vocabulary was attained by reading stories to the class, then assessing what they understood about story. Reading to individual students helped me to make connections with quieter students and assess their comprehension and vocabulary. Limited vocabulary means limited comprehension. My current students build vocabulary by our discussion of words in our selected readings, definitions, and making life connections with the words. This helps increase familiarity with words and increases their ability to identify the word in the future.

The state guidelines for the age of students I taught required students to spell and write their own names. However, many times students entered the class not having learned at home how to hold a pencil or a crayon prior to starting school. We prepare lessons to help students learn to properly hold pencils. We begin to help them feel comfortable with simple circles, horizontal, and vertical lines. Once students became comfortable with these lines, we have them begin to help them connect the lines and circles. These lessons often include simple songs used to help students remember where to start letters and directions to move the pencil to form the letters. This handwriting concept is the same for young students or students needing help with their penmanship.

Phonics is simply connecting letters with their sounds. Our state guidelines says four-year-olds should be able to recognize at least 20 letters, upper and lower case and to recognize the sounds of at least, 20 letters. This is a lot of information for three, four, and five-year-olds. We break the lessons into steps. We start with student names, because it is with what they will be most familiar. Children can often recognize their own names, either by the first letter or the whole word. Phonics are best taught by repetition. I taught these concepts by using names, objects in the classroom, and phonics-specific games to help students learn sounds and letters.

Whether in a classroom or tutoring one-on-one, it is my main job to create an environment for learning. The student has to feel safe, valued, and smart. When students feel those attributes, actual learning can begin.
