Bio

I love learning and I want your child to feel just as passionate about their learning experiences as I do about mine!

My goal is always to place the joy and responsibility of learning in the hands of my students. I choose academically, socially, and developmentally appropriate lessons and activities.

My goal is always to place the joy and responsibility of learning in the hands of my students. I choose academically, socially, and developmentally appropriate lessons and activities.

Sometimes, in a rare situation, I have to coax and guide children toward something they need to work on improving, although I've found that even the youngest kids have a remarkable sense of what they know, what they don't know, and what they want to know. I find that the best environment for learning is one that builds mutual trust, respect, and responsibility while also having fun.

I use games, high-interest texts, as well as real-world skills and challenges that are just right for the individual learner.

I have a Master degree in education, 13 years of classroom teaching experience, and several years of tutoring experience.

I cannot wait to meet you and hear how I can help!

Subjects

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have been certified to teach ESL for about 6 years. I understand that second language learners are being vulnerable when they are learning from me, and I respect and admire that they are willing to learn English. When working with adults, I use textbooks that can be ordered from Amazon.com, and my main teaching tool for working with students online or face-to-face is conversation. I use the textbook to help students practice when we are not together.
Grammar

Grammar

I have several very good resources for teaching Grammar. as a writer, I use grammar rules constantly, and my husband is very helpful in assisting me (he is an English teacher and college-level instructor, as well). It can be a tough subject for some, and I am sensitive to that fact. I try to use whatever area a student is already proficient in (math, for example) to help them make connections to grammar rules and definitions.

Elementary Education

Common Core,

Common Core

Although I am a teacher in Texas, I am very familiar with common core as I work for several people in other states to create curriculum items sold on a teaching website.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

My Texas Teaching Certification covers math as well as the other core subjects taught in elementary, and while teaching over the past decade, I have received some excellent training dealing with teaching all students and helping them succeed mathematically. I like helping struggling students in math particularly because it's systematic and logical. If a child struggles in multiplication, for example, you can follow the trail back to addition and subtraction, and then if they are still struggling, back to counting and number recognition skills. Also, I struggled in math myself, so I am sensitive to the difficulties students may find in dealing with math. My goal is to help students feel confident in their own math proficiency.

Handwriting,

Handwriting

I have a Masters in Education with a focus in Early Childhood and have taught for 14 years. Several years of my teaching career were spent in Pre-K and Kindergarten, where I worked with children on all aspects of handwriting, including gross and fine motor skills, appropriate letter formation, memory, and letter recall. I have also worked with students with dyspraxia and have spent some time researching and studying it as I work with several tutoring students struggling with it.
Homeschool,

Homeschool

I homeschooled as a high school student and homeschooled my daughter for a while. I understand the challenges and victories of homeschooling and am happy to provide the academic backup that families may want as they homeschool their children. Sometimes, it's just nice to have someone who understands what you're going through and can help answer questions.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have a Masters in Education with a focus on Early Childhood and have been teaching for 14 years. I've taught Pre-K, Kinder, and First Grade, which are heavily dependent on phonics instruction. I've also been tutoring struggling older elementary and middle school students, and I've also been an instructor at an area college for remedial reading and writing courses. Most of my experience has been in reading, focusing heavily in phonics education.
Reading,

Reading

I have been a reading tutor for a year, but I have been teaching reading for 13 years. In that time, I have taught every grade level and age from pre-readers (4-year-olds and adults) to adults. I specialize in helping students who struggle with reading because of disabilities. I've worked with students who have autism, selective mutism, emotional disorders, fetal alcohol syndrome, dyslexia, speech issues - including stuttering and apraxia, and a variety of other issues. I've found proven methods that work for my students, and I am willing to try anything to help a student with their reading and comprehension skills. I've found that both creativity, perseverance, and consistency are the keys to gaining ground with every reading issue. I'm a reading expert who is passionate about helping people feel more comfortable with the subject. I'd be thrilled to help you or your loved one!
Spelling

Spelling

I am a terrible speller! Well, I used to be. When I started teaching, though, I realized that a lot of the mistakes I made were typical errors. I read very well and I read constantly, so I understand phonics rules and the way words are made, I just had to learn to apply those skills in a different way. Spelling in English is a lot more organized and efficient that some people think. The rules are backed up with information that makes sense when you really research and learn about the origins of English. It's never too late to learn to spell well, either. It helps improve writing and also affects reading comprehension. Let me help you spell like a champ!

I'm a native English speaker, and I've been teaching others English for over a decade. I have a certification in English as a Second Language, and can teacher grammar, spelling, writing, reading, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension - you name it, I've got it covered. My husband is also an English teacher and is an instructor at an area college. I've worked with college students and adults, although most of my experience is with children. I love working with students of any age.
