I started tutoring through WyzAnt in September 2013. I have continued to work with students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT and ISEE. In general, about half of my students are doing test preparation and half are getting some kind of help with school.

At the tutoring center where I worked, we had a number of students who were being tutored in order to become very advanced in their studies at school and to gain admission to highly selective colleges by getting top-notch scores on their SAT. We also had students who were struggling to do well in their classes and therefore needed help with their homework and with understanding the material they were learning in school. I worked successfully with both kinds of students.

My approach to tutoring is definitely gentle, but also firm in terms of expecting my students to work hard during the tutoring sessions and to work diligently on any homework I might assign. I am sensitive to the learning styles of my students and do everything I can to communicate in a way that makes sense to them. I often make use of visuals and manipulatives in teaching various concepts. My goal is to enable students to really understand the material they are studying.

I am happy to use whatever school or other materials that parents and/or students would like. I am also prepared to suggest additional materials that might be helpful for a particular student in a specific subject area. I am familiar with a number of very helpful resources.

Before working at the tutoring center, I was actively involved in the homeschooling community. I homeschooled my older two children through high school and my younger two children through 8th grade. I also taught enrichment classes in the areas of math, science, music, and art to students of all ages in a homeschool co-op for eight years.

Grammar

Grammar

I absolutely love explaining and teaching grammar to students of all ages. I think it is the orderliness of grammar that I like, and that is what I try to get across to students. When doing grammar, everything within a sentence has a function and a place, and it all needs to fit together and make sense like a puzzle.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor's degree in math from Wesleyan University. From 2010 to 2014, I worked at a tutoring center where I helped students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Although I was qualified to tutor at the middle and high school levels and did have students at those levels, I was given most of the elementary school students (K-6) because I seemed to do particularly well with them, and they seemed to like working with me. I taught reading, writing, and math to literally all of the K-6 grade levels. Since 2013, I have been doing private tutoring through WyzAnt, and I have continued to work with students of all ages. Of my non-test preparation students, roughly half are K-6 and half are 7-12.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have a bachelor's degree in math, and I have worked with a number of students at the elementary level of math. I spent nearly five years working at a tutoring center (Oct. 2009 - August 2014), and I have been doing private tutoring through WyzAnt since September of 2013. I am a strong proponent of the concrete to abstract method of teaching math. Especially with younger students, but even with older students, I make use of various manipulatives for teaching addition, subtraction, division, place value, fractions, and geometry.

Phonics,

Phonics

I homeschooled my four children and wanted to make sure that we used a phonics-based curriculum for learning to read. I used the Adventures in Phonics program from Christian Liberty Press. I found it to be very thorough and well-organized, with just the right amount of review. It provided a great foundation in reading for all of my children, and at the same time, it gave me a good foundation in knowing how to teach phonics. After homeschooling my children, I worked at a tutoring center for nearly five years. During that time, I provided phonics tutoring for a number of students in grades K-3, using the Spectrum Phonics series. I have been tutoring through Wyzant since 2013. I have a steady stream of phonics students: young ones who are just learning to read and older ones for whom reading has been an on-going challenge.
Reading

Reading

From October 2010 through August 2014, I worked at a tutoring center where I helped students of all ages in the area of reading. I worked with young students who were in the beginning stages of learning to read, intermediate students who were practicing reading comprehension skills, such as Main Idea, Details, Conclusions, Cause/Effect, and Inferences, and older students who were learning to tackle difficult reading passages and answer comprehensive questions. I have been doing private tutoring through WyzAnt since September 2013. I have continued to help young students who are just beginning to read and older students who need to be able to read complex passages on a variety of topics for tests such as the ISEE, SSAT, SAT, and ACT. Recently, I have also been helping upper-elementary students for whom reading has been an ongoing challenge. We work on phonics, reading out loud, and reading comprehension.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

The ACT English Test requires a command of grammar from the word level up through the phrase, clause, and sentence levels. It also requires expertise in the use of commas, colons, and semi-colons. Finally, it requires an understanding of how writing should be done, including word choice, sentence order, what to include and what not to include. I work with my students in all of these areas, honing their skills so that they can handle the various types of questions on the test.

From 2010 to 2014, I worked at a tutoring center where I helped many students prepare for the (old) SAT. I worked with fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-graders who were trying to qualify for recognition and special learning opportunities through Duke TIP, and I worked with highly motivated high school students who were aiming for very high SAT scores in order to gain admission to top-notch colleges and universities. Since 2013, I have been doing private tutoring through WyzAnt, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT. History

Geography

When I was a child, my family moved around to various countries due to my father's job with the State Department. I lived in Turkey and Pakistan when I was very young and then in Egypt and Afghanistan when I was in elementary school. Later, during high school (boarding school in the U.S.) and college, I visited my parents in Ghana and Swaziland. I have also done a fair amount of traveling during my life. I have been to Mexico and Canada and to England, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Iran, Kenya, and Japan. Perhaps because of all the moving around and traveling I did as a child and young adult, I have always enjoyed looking at maps and knowing where various places are. When I tutor, I often get out an atlas and show my student where a certain city, country, mountain, or river is that they are reading about. I also enjoy teaching map skills to students, although with the internet, GPS, and Google Earth, atlas skills are probably not needed as much these days.

I have created a comprehensive preparation plan that can easily be modified based on the strengths and weaknesses of the student, prior experience with the SAT, and the amount of time available before taking the test. Roughly half of my students, at any given time, are doing some kind of test preparation.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

The SAT Writing and Language section requires a command of grammar from the word level up through the phrase, clause, and sentence levels. It also requires expertise in the use of commas, colons, and semi-colons. Finally, it requires an understanding of how writing should be done, including word choice, sentence order, what to include and what not to include. I work with my students in all of these areas, honing their skills so that they can handle the various types of questions on the test. I have spent many hours learning about the new SAT, especially the Writing and Language section which is very different from the old SAT. I have created a comprehensive preparation plan that can easily be modified based on the strengths and weaknesses of the student, prior experience with the SAT, and the amount of time available before taking the test. From 2010 to 2014, I worked at a tutoring center where I helped many students prepare for the SAT. SSAT

SSAT

I am very familiar with the four multiple-choice sections of the SSAT, and I teach strategies that help students do their best in each section of the test. I review/teach subject material, especially in math, and I prepare students for the timing aspect of the test. While working at a tutoring center (Oct. 2009 - August 2014), I prepared several students for the middle and upper levels of the SSAT. These students did very well on the test and were admitted to the private school of their choice. Since 2013, I have been doing private tutoring through WyzAnt, and I have continued to prepare students for the SSAT. Roughly half of my students, at any given time, are doing some kind of test preparation.

An Angel

she would get 6 stars if not for the online experience being a bit different for us to be used to. Caring, kind, patient, thorough, considerate , inspiring, suggestive, and layers of wisdom. Shes in it for the long run with you. You might want to keep her permanently. She just made me daughter feel good, more calm, hopeful, and encouraged as well.
