About Chetan

I am passionate about tutoring because it allows me to combine my love of learning with the sheer joy of helping students gain a better understanding of the particular subject matter. I especially love helping students with statistics and various other mathematical sub-fields such as algebra 1, algebra 2, and pre-algebra because I love changing their attitudes about these subjects. This passion was reinforced by my experiences as a statistics and psychology tutor for two academic years at the Los Angeles Valley College. During my time there, I helped students of varying age groups ranging from freshmen to adult learners with varying levels of understanding of the subject matter.

I realize that due to the technical concepts involved in statistics and algebra, students tend to memorize formulas and concepts, but become frustrated when they encounter problems that require them to apply variations of those particular formulas or concepts. In general, I address this issue by explaining the concepts in terms of relevant real world scenarios. Specifically, I first determine whether students are having difficulties with understanding the connection between a particular concept and its application to the problem or with the concept itself by asking them to solve alternative scenarios of the same problem. Then, I explain each step of the problem as it relates to the concept(s) in the context of relevant real word scenarios while confirming that they truly understand my explanations. Finally, I assign problems that involve applying the concept(s) in similar ways to the ones with which they were having difficulty but also in different ways that require a firm understanding of the concept(s).

During this process, I have seen students' facial expressions change as they realize that they are more than capable of mastering the subject that they previously thought to be insurmountable or even boring. What was required was a change in how they thought about the subject matter which we were able to achieve over the course of our tutoring sessions. As a tutor, I have seen this noticeable transformation in their thinking patterns and attitudes about the subject matter being reflected in dramatic improvement in their scores on tests and assignments. I will strive to help you achieve academic success that I have helped many other students achieve in the past.

I love tutoring algebra and statistics because I love problem solving, but also because I love helping students unravel complex problems into basic principles and concepts. I have excelled in college level algebra and both applied and mathematical statistics courses and have helped junior or community college students with various algebra and statistics courses for more about more than two academic years. The reason I particularly love helping students with these courses is that I have noticed them to perceive some or all of these courses as dry or in the case of algebra as even, irrelevant to the real world. I strive to resolve this issue by using a lot of relevant real world examples in my explanations. I find this to be the best way to master complex concepts in algebra and statistics. I look forward to helping you develop mathematical problem solving skills that will ensure your success in your algebra and statistics courses.

I love learning about and tutoring psychology because I love learning about what makes people tick. I have excelled in various college level psychology courses such as General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, and Biological (Physiological) Psychology and plan to pursue the doctoral degree in clinical psychology. I have tutored General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Social Psychology in a community college setting and have helped students with both understanding complex concepts and their applications to real world scenarios in Abnormal and Social Psychology. I look forward to helping you succeed in your psychology courses.

I conduct both online and face-to-face tutoring sessions and require at least 1 hour notice of cancellation for any reason. I look forward to an opportunity to help you succeed in your academic journey and help you reach the "aha" moment that I have helped many other students reach in the past.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

In addition to having a bachelor's of science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, I have had extensive experience with a variety statistical techniques used in bio-statistics in both independent and guided research settings using IBM SPSS. These include fecundity analysis in ecology, probabilities in population genetics and epidemiology, validity, reliability, and prevalence analysis in epidemiology. These areas of interest include basic statistical techniques such as t-test, ANOVA using F-test, MANOVA, Chi-Square analysis, non parametric techniques such as Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Kruskal-Wallis test, sign test, etc. Finally, I have a high level of familiarity with both simple and multiple linear regression and non-parametric alternatives such as Spearman's rank correlation.

Hindi

I have native level fluency in reading, speaking, and writing Hindi. I have about 8 years of formal schooling in this language along with practical experience conversing with the locals in India for more than 10 years. I can not only help you with mastering the pronunciations and grammar, but can also help you with understanding the cultural context. Whatever you learning goals may be, I look forward to helping you in connecting with about 258 million native Hindi speakers.

Psychology

I have excelled in all my college-level psychology courses as I pursue a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology. I plan to apply to PhD. programs in clinical psychology after earning my BA. I tutored community college students in Psychology for more than two years and thoroughly enjoyed it. In my tutoring sessions, I focus on the connection between a particular concept and the larger picture that it fits into. I look forward to helping you with abnormal psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, and biological (physiological psychology).

SPSS

I have been successfully using SPSS for about three years in both courses and psychology research projects. I have helped students effectively use this powerful program in their statistics and psychology courses for more than two academic years as a tutor at the Los Angeles Valley College. I look forward to helping you navigate and utilize SPSS effectively in your psychology, statistics, and research courses.

Statistics

I have helped college students with both applied and mathematical statistics courses as a tutor at a busy Los Angeles Valley College tutoring center. During my time there, I helped students with study skills, test preparation, assignments and projects, and developing a better understanding of complex concepts. I believe the best way to explain statistical concepts is by highlighting their application to real-world scenarios. I look forward to helping you develop mathematical thinking patterns essential for success in your statistics courses.
