In addition to my passion for teaching, I am passionate about helping others.
As a teacher of Spanish at the college level in the United States I have had the opportunity to teach students from different socio-economic backgrounds and majors. My teaching experience includes elementary and intermediate Spanish, as well as an advanced course in grammar and literature. These courses include the analysis and comprehension of several readings, such as short stories and poems. In my elementary and intermediate courses I use technology to complement class instruction, as well as help students cement and practice the material. As part of the course, students are exposed to a variety of cultures across Latin America and Spain, as well as history through a myriad of audio-visual resources such as movies and music. Additionally, I share with students personal experiences from my travels in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela and Spain.
In my discussion-based advanced grammar and literature class, students are exposed to the study of short stories and poems, as well as the historical context of this literature. In this class students also acquire a solid foundation in writing, as well as improve their pronunciation and conversational Spanish.
As part of my teaching experience, I was able to learn new teaching methods from my colleagues, and at the same time gain insights from students regarding their experiences with Spanish as a second language. My classes were discussion-based, and thus students were actively engaged in every class. In order to incorporate literature, linguistics, culture and history into the class material, I share with students my own cultural and travel experiences. For example, my experience in Mexico was part of a student-faculty travel abroad program coordinated by a small liberal arts institution in Texas. Additionally, I share with students the particulars of the various cultures in the Caribbean and Latin America. Indeed, there are a large number of very useful resources that can be used to complement the class discussion from a historical and cultural standpoint.
Throughout my teaching experience I have engaged with students outside the classroom and the community to further the teaching of Spanish. For example, at a College, and as a teaching assistant, I consistently engaged with students at the “Spanish Table”, as well as other more traditional events like movies (in Spanish and Portuguese). I believe these are important examples of ways the teaching of a foreign language can be complemented.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
