About Kristina

Hello, all! I'm Kristina and I have several years of experience in both teaching and tutoring. I am a graduate student finishing my Master of Arts in English with an emphasis on Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Instruction. I am a tutor and the Assistant Director of my university's Writing Center. In additional, I work for a non-profit literacy program that provides pathways to learning reading, English Language Acquisition, GED completion and more. I love tutoring at both of these institutions because my goal is for my student to no longer need me. I believe that my students are best served not by someone editing or proofreading their work, but through one on one sessions to help the student become a stronger, more confident writer. I especially enjoy helping students with personal essays, such as may be required for admissions, scholarships, and more. I love helping the individuality and personal identity of my students shine through!

Further, I teach Composition at my university and Adult Basic Education for my town's literacy program. Through these experiences, I have encountered wonderful challenges that have allowed me to adapt to the needs of each students. Not all students learn the same way, so I use a multi-modal approach to writing instruction and reading comprehension that has included use of art, graphic novels, literature, commercials, and more. My students come from all over the globe, so if you are a second language learner, have no fear! I'm never afraid to admit that I don't know something, but we'll both benefit by finding the answer together. I have worked with students from elementary ages to senior citizens- all with varied needs, to which I will do my utmost to accommodate. I have also assisted university faculty in editing articles for publication, as well as giving feedback on assignment rubric or syllabus clarity, so I am certainly able to provide this sort of assistance as well. Please do note that I consider my sessions to be "safe spaces," which means that I do not discriminate on any grounds; further, I cannot tolerate disparaging comments regarding race, sexual identity, age, religion, or anything attacking or offensive to any particular group, society, or culture.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Zoology

I have a 10 year employment history in veterinary medicine and have worked in varied environments with large and small animals, as well as exotic animals. A former nursing director for a full service veterinary hospital, I was responsible for teaching/training new nurses and technicians. My specialized areas include animal behavior and nutrition, running and interpreting results for lab work (including blood, urine, ear swabs, stool, and tissue samples), emergency and intensive care, zoonosis (trans-species pathogens), radiology, anesthesia administration, surgical support, animal husbandry, and, perhaps most importantly, safety practices when handling animals or lab specimens.
