My favorite aspect of teaching is developing a love for learning in my students as they develop self-confidence and obtain their goals. I was not always an "A student". I struggled in Elementary School but developed study habits that allowed me to graduate from High School and Baylor University with honors. Also, one of my daughters has learning differences. I had to get very creative with her instructional strengths and preferences. I am proud to say she went on to graduate from Texas A&M! Because of my initial struggles and my daughter's experience, I have patience and sensitivity with children who need a little extra instruction, encouragement, and motivation. Not only have I instilled the desire to reach and obtain goals with my own children, but also with my students in the public school system. It has been extremely rewarding to witness my students reach their potential with improved grades and test scores!
I specialize in Elementary reading comprehension, writing composition, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and math. During my tutorials, I like to use a variety of resources to keep students engaged. As a General Elementary Education Teacher and Special Education Teacher, I found that students enjoy reviewing and retaining instruction through manipulatives such as games, concrete models, and hands-on material. Using concrete manipulatives is the first step to using mental images and models. When students demonstrate understanding with the concept at this physical, or concrete level, then they are ready to move to the next level, where they can apply their knowledge using representations of the objects in place of the objects themselves.
After every lesson, I assign homework, and provide periodic assessments and progress reports. I welcome feedback from students and parents as this will assist me in customizing tutorial lessons for your child's specific needs and goals. Complete satisfaction from my students and parents is paramount.
A quiet and comfortable study place is highly recommended. Therefore, I teach private lessons and group classes in my home which is located near downtown Tyler. However, I am happy to travel to another preferred location if that is more convenient. A 24 hour cancellation notice is appreciated and I can offer make-up classes.
I look forward to hearing from you and getting your child on the road to successful learning! Zana has been working with my grandson and she gets a "thumbs" up from "Noni, Mom and Beau". In just a couple of sessions, Beau no longer avoids math, he is eager to go to Ms. Zana and he has made great gains in his understand of subtraction! We plan on Ms. Zana being in our lives for a long time. Thank you so much for helping us through one of life's "hiccups".
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've had a lot of experience with 1st and 2nd grade kiddos struggling in math. I have tutored 1st and 2nd grade math in my home this year and taught it several years. I'm confident I can help your child become stronger in math and boost self-confidence!
I have had 10 years experience in teaching students in elementary grades Kinder - 4th grade. I am familiar with several different phonics curriculum. Many times in my tutorials after school, I would focus on phonics to improve reading. Phonemic awareness is the foundation to reading fluently so I focused on phonetic instruction in my classroom probably more than other teachers. I have games and other resources that I am planning to use in my tutorial instruction for phonics.
Reading is my favorite subject! I have taught many students how to read. Phonemic Awareness, knowing the sounds of letters and letter combinations, is key to reading. Not only do I want my students to know how to pronounce words correctly, I also want them to comprehend what they are reading. I have tutored many hours in reading and have great resources for students to keep them engaged, entertained, and learning to read fluently in a painless way!
