About Elizabeth

I am two classes away from my Bachelors of Arts in English at UT Tyler. I am looking forward to being a high school English teacher when I complete my post-baccalaureate certification. I am minoring in Spanish and I love Spanish poetry and literature as well as all things English. From my very first English class, I knew that I had found my niche. I love everything about literature; from Old English to modern works, it is all an immensely enjoyable experience. Because I enjoy literature, grammar, and language arts so much, I take great pride in helping my students excel in those subjects. I want every student to develop a love for language and literature, and to realize that being good at reading and writing is a very attainable goal.

I spent six months teaching ESL in Peru and I also have worked as a homeschool assistant for a family. The boys were in 8th and 10th grade and for their writing assignments, they could barely produce a coherent paragraph. After several weeks of reading and writing exercises, each boy could write a tight, organized 5-paragraph essay and began to receive A's and B's in their writing assignments.

For students that struggle with writing, I like to use literature as a model. By reading a well-written passage and dissecting what makes it good, the student can begin to develop a sixth sense for how words fit together. We do fun exercises like, who can write the longest sentence but still have it make sense, or who can write the most awful paragraph, or who can describe something without actually saying what it is and still have everyone know exactly what they are talking about.

I also focus on grammar and organization. Research papers, book reports, and literary analysis are all large projects that can seem daunting to students. I help them to break it down into manageable bits. With patience, encouragement, and practice, even the most reluctant reader and writer can produce "A" papers.

I have a strong foundation of Spanish grammar and spelling. I have lived in Peru for a total of eight months and, while my Spanish is still a work in progress, I have the tools and expertise to help beginner Spanish students excel. I have taken three years of Spanish and am currently studying Spanish poetry and literature.

I am very detail-oriented when it comes to grammar and word usage. Literary analysis is my area of expertise but I am also skilled at helping students with basic writing tasks such as book reports or research papers. I teach students how to effectively proofread their own work so that they continue to make good grades even after they no longer need a tutor.

If you are struggling with reading or writing, don't buy into the myth that only certain people are writer-material. Anyone can become a skilled and detailed writer. It takes work and lots of practice, but I can help you achieve reading and writing success. Contact me today to schedule your lesson.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
