I have been teaching at the college level now for over 30 years after two years of teaching high school. I went to a graduate school for two years (Ecole Normale) to learn how to teach literature and English to non-native English speakers. So I am very versed in teaching English to Speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL and TOEFL). However, I have spent most of my teaching career with native speakers of English, teaching Freshman Composition and literatures (American, English, World literature) and assisting students and learners with English learning and writing in language labs.
In addition, I have published articles on literature and presented research at academic conferences to enhance my confidence and ability to do what I teach and tell my students to do- research, reading and writing. So I am very comfortable with all aspects of English, either as a subject for foreign non-native speakers, as a second language , and native speakers of English and as literature.
Furthermore, I have supervised senior projects and theses written in English. I have also sat on English defense juries and examined works written my students and colleagues.
The above is to say I have covered the entire gamut of English, both as a skill, language and subject. My many years of teaching (since 1982) gives me a unique profile as an individual who brings a variety of skills to teaching and tutoring English. Through these years of teaching, I have had the experience of working in colleges and universities spanning from Oklahoma to Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, Indiana, and now in Texas. I have had an enriching experience with multicultural audiences- white, black, foreign, and Latino. So I can work effectively with a culturally diverse community and audience.
I have also taught online classes and worked with Adult and Continuing Education projects. The later requires a lot of patience and expertise with adults who return to school after several years of non-schooling experience. It requires the patience of carefully going with them through some of the fundamentals of each subject at a level where tertiary work should be reinforced. This process has taught me patience and new ideas of teaching which I had always taken for granted.
I am ready to confront any and every learning of teaching and tutoring. I have been teaching at the college level now for over 30 years after two years of teaching high school. I went to a graduate school for two years (Ecole Normale) to learn how to teach literature and English to non-native
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
