Western Illinois University (Board of Trustees BA English major)
For over twenty years I have been a tutor and freelance writer, with ten of those years also spent as a teacher in private schools and one alternative high school. I hold a B.A. from Western Illinois University, Phi Kappa Phi.
I homeschooled my son from middle school through high school. It was exciting to see him transition into college. Our years of one-on-one schooling have been of great help to me in tutoring because of the similar interactive teaching and learning environments. My students have ranged from elementary school level to adulthood. Subjects have included reading comprehension, composition, grammar and mechanics, creative writing, workplace ESL, literature, research and standardized test preparation. I sometimes recommend inexpensive but effective workbooks to reinforce skills covered in tutoring sessions. I want all of my students to experience the sweet taste of success.
Students will find me patient, encouraging and able to improvise according to individual learning styles. Effort and participation are requested in return. The goal is a positive relationship that furthers academic progress. Kathleen has been tutoring my three children (ages 11, 13 and 15) for several months. She gears the lessons to their ages and interests. She handles their less than eager mood with kindness and patience and helps them stay on task. I have seen an increase in their confidence in writing and on standardized testing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I help students prepare through review of pertinent information, the introduction of test-taking strategies, practice tests and discussion of their results, and suggestions on how to increase concentration and alertness with proper nutrition, exercise, adequate sleep and more.
The ability to understand the written word is critical. Whether the subject is English, calculus or chemistry, there will be some reading involved. I want to help you approach ACT Reading with effective strategies that increase your reading comprehension and give you confidence. We will also discuss the test-taker benefits of proper nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep.
History was my minor in college. The textbooks can be confusing unless you learn to spot the key concepts and points that support them. I can help you do this, plus teach you memorizing techniques and connections to keep the facts in your head.
As a Christian who has taught Bible classes for more than thirty years, I realize that people regard this ancient book in many different ways: Faith text, literature, a unique perspective on world events--to name a few.
I will keep your particular Bible study goals in mind. I have several reference books and other resources that often help.
I have tutored elementary school students on an individual basis in the past. I have also taught them and administered standardized tests to them in a private school classroom setting over the course of two years. I enjoy working with K-6th grade students.
I am glad that I took both European history and literature courses while in college, because the blend has given me greater understanding of this continent. I can help you find, retain and discuss the main points in that heavy European history textbook you're lugging around.
I ask students to take an active part in studying literature, asking the right questions and evaluating the work on the basis of the answers. Armed with the right questions--which we discuss--most students report more understanding and enjoyment of this subject.
Do you dislike proofreading? ("Hate" is such a strong word. :/) If you do, you are not alone. Average writers and acknowledged greats have their proofreading frustrations, as the quotes below indicate:
"I do my best proofreading right after I hit send." --Unknown
"My spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places." --A. A. Milne
"Proofread carefully to see if you any words out." --Dave Barry
If you can relate to any or all of the above, let's talk.
Reading is essential! It helps in all other areas of study and daily living. I use passages of writing appropriate to the reading level of my student. The student reads and I follow, giving help where needed and asking questions about grammar, punctuation, phonetic pronunciation, spelling, word or phrase meanings. We discuss in depth. I may also suggest inexpensive but effective workbooks to enhance reading comprehension.
Reading comprehension is an area of great concern to me, so I like to help students prepare for SAT Reading. We look at the main sentences in each paragraph to determine what that paragraph is about. We study the passage's vocabulary, qualifying words, transitions, connotations and elements that are unique to the piece of writing before us. The ability to understand what is written helps in every academic discipline--indeed, in all aspects of one's life.
Time is of the essence when writing an essay
for the SAT. That's why I have my students practice beforehand with several essays. We study every aspect of a prompt and an essay. The student must understand what the prompt requests, how to brainstorm and make connections, and how to build complete paragraphs with clear transitions from one to the next. The student walks into the testing center knowing that, plus how to write an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. Being prepared saves a great deal of time!
In my junior year of high school, my English teacher wrote at the top of one of my essays, "What are you, a vocabulary vamp?!" He taught me early to strike a balance between my love for words and the judicious use of them. I believe my enthusiasm for this subject is contagious.
My many history classes throughout high school and college taught me that--whether with state, national or international history--the same basic study skills and strategies apply. I can teach you how to take notes as you read chapters, how to decide which information is the most important, how to retrieve and retain what you've read. We also discuss connections, cause and effect--so important to a better understanding of history.
I have visited my husband's native land of Japan several times, and we have lived in Southeast Asia. I would like to share with you historical and cultural insights regarding these lands.
I am a published freelance writer. I have audited creative writing courses and attended seminars for my craft and for my own enjoyment. Sir Francis Bacon wrote that writing makes for an "exact" person. This is a discipline that benefits all subjects. Whether you want to write more creatively or more precisely for composition or research assignments, I would love to help you.
