About Austin

Greetings,

Need help studying math or science? Well you've come to the right profile. Let me introduce myself and tell you why I'm qualified to be your tutor.

My name is Austin. I graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Sam Houston State University in December 2012. I majored in general biology, but my curriculum involved several math, physics, and chemistry classes. I minored in business communications, which involved public speaking and technical writing courses. I mention this because one must be a skilled communicator to be an effective teacher.

In 2014, I worked with four individual students through Wyzant. My students' subjects included 9th grade biology, 10th grade Spanish and 11th grade math (algebra 2). All four of my students improved their grades; my B students moved to an A and my failing students passed with a B/C. All four of my students took repeated lessons from me; I developed a strong rapport with both the students and their parents. In short, I truly enjoy working with students who are seeking to improve their grades, their content knowledge and understanding, and their overall academic success.
FYI: I am also handy for helping with test-taking strategies.

In 2016, I received my teaching certificate and became a formal educator. Today, I teach eighth grade science. The alternative certificate program (TX Teachers) has enlightened me to new teaching techniques and refined my ability to help students cement understanding of new material. The classroom experience has improved my content knowledge and my ability to get my student(s) involved in the learning.

Let me conclude by expressing how grateful I am that you took the time to read my profile. With a formal science background and a passion for helping others, I look forward to working with you and helping you grow and succeed in your subject.

Warmly,

Austin

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Since grade school, I've developed a deep interest in problem-solving, especially in mathematics. I have a strong grasp for mathematical principles, and I can help your student understand key concepts, such as finding least common multiples to multiplying and dividing fractions to graphing quadratic functions.

I am confident that after several one-on-one sessions with me, your student will never again be hesitant to "solve for X," or perform any other basic algebraic expression.

I look forward to helping you succeed in Algebra!

Algebra 2

Since grade school, I've always grasped and excelled in mathematics, particularly in algebra 2. This is partly because I had excellent teachers throughout my academic career; and partly because I'm a musician, so I quickly recognize patterns and know how to efficiently solve equations.

In 2014, I worked with two algebra II students who were struggling to pass. Over a few months, I built great relationships with both students and their parents. By increasing their content mastery and improving their test-taking skills, both students boosted their averages to modest B's.

Biology

I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology, received from SHSU in December of 2012. I was an officer in the Beta Beta Beta National Biology Honor Society (Jan 2010 thru Dec 2012). As a member of BBB, I regularly tutored biology students in subjects ranging from botany to cellular biology.

Prealgebra

I've always excelled in mathematics, particularly Prealgebra. Perhaps it's because I had wonderful teachers throughout my academic career, or perhaps it's because my "learning style" involves recognizing patterns, which helps me solve equations.

Zoology

As an Honor student and member of the TriBeta Biological Honor Society, every week I was required to tutor students--both science majors and non-science majors--in their science courses. These courses ranged from Intro to Biological Concepts to Advanced Cellular Biology and Genetics.

I have successfully completed the zoology lecture & lab course required for Sam Houston science majors. I can assist students with study habits, learning techniques, and understanding basic principles of the following four zoology subjects:

1. Evolutionary biology
2. Behavioral biology
3. Ecology
4. Taxonomy

Great Tutor!

Austin has tutored my daughter a few times now and she really likes him. My daughter is a freshman in high school in advanced classes, Austin has really helped her. He has worked well with her schedule and for that we are grateful. I would highly recommend Austin as a tutor!
