About Kateland

My teaching experience began while I was completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. I volunteered as a peer mentor in order to contribute to the success of new students, help others achieve academic excellence, and assist with freshmen seminar courses. My time at UMHB helped me appreciate the importance for lifelong learning and service to others, and I understand how the environment in which a student learns often has the biggest impact on their success.
Communication is one of my strongest skills. During my time as Graphic Designer at UMHB, I was selected from among a group or highly qualified candidates to lead a campus awareness scheme for the Quality Enhancement Plan, which aided in the university’s accreditation renewal. My interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with various university departments resulted in successful teamwork, brainstorming, and giving and receiving constructive criticism.
While completing CELTA, I developed methods to ensure maximum student engagement at elementary, intermediate, and upper-intermediate English language levels: I adapted authentic materials to achieve active student participation and interest, I limited teacher talk time to create a student centered lesson, and I consistently reflected on my performance and acted appropriately to continuously improve.
My initiative, organizational skills, and ability to work well under pressure help me excel in the fast-paced teaching environment. Furthermore, I consistently create positive and beneficial relationships with colleagues and superiors. I will help promote meaningful learning in the students’ lives. I appreciate your consideration and time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

My time completing my CELTA (Certification of English Language Teaching to Adults) gave me many hours of hands on learning and experience. This rigorous course required me to constantly be prepared, create my own lessons and lesson material, and work with a broad range of students from different backgrounds. This course gave me confidence and the desire to pursue teaching English as a foreign language.

My time as a Graphic Designer started when I was very young designing flyers for local businesses and friends. I then decided to pursue a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Visual Communication. During these four years I also worked as a Graphic Designer at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's Townsend Memorial Library. I have over six years of both professional and freelance experience in graphic design. As part of my degree I was also required to complete many other fine art courses in which I excelled in such as drawing, painting, and printmaking.

Please contact me with any questions you may have or if you wish to see samples of my work. I look forward to hearing from you and hope I can help you with your learning goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have drawn all my life and the love of art led me to pursue a Bachelor's of fine arts. I can draw hyper realism, cartoons, and everything in between. I have experience with upper and lower level drawing classes as well as figure drawing. Drawing is an everyday part of my life and a passion.

Graphic Design

My undergraduate degree was in Graphic Design but I have been doing freelance work well before university. I also have four years working experience. I see graphic design as a practical application of art which is constantly evolving. It's this reason that allured me to graphic design and always keeps me wanting to develop myself more in this field.

IELTS

I have acquired my CELTA at the University of Leicester in England. This program is for teaching English as a second language and is accredited world wide by Cambridge. This program was very intense and covered many different language preparation and testing strategies.

Painting

I am skilled in different areas of painting including watercolor, acrylic, and oil. During my time working towards my bachelor's of fine arts degree I took many classes related to all three of these painting styles. I know a lot about painting technique as well as theory and history. I love painting and see it as one of my strong points.
