About Ann

I have taught lots of kids to become more successful, especially as readers and writers. During the last 30 years, I have privately tutored about 25 students, taught students in grades K-5, university students; and trained many teachers, principals, and superintendents. I can help you child become more successful!

As an experienced educator, I realize the importance of supporting learning so all students can achieve success. Depending on the learner's prior knowledge, the level of difficulty of the printed text, and the intensity of instruction, many learners need differentiated instruction to be able to master various learning tasks. Most students need to be actively supported during the learning process; either by reinforcement or redirection. At times, some students miss significant parts of a teacher's direct instruction and struggle to fill-in-the-gaps alone.
Tutoring and/or instructional intervention can help a student "catch up" and be ready for the next steps in learning.

While working as a teacher for 20 years with students in grades K-5 , I also taught Reading and Language Arts courses to university juniors and seniors at night and in summers for 10 years. Then I worked with teachers in school districts in 11 counties around Victoria as a regional education specialist for two years. Working as the Language Arts Coordinator, Grades K-12 for El Campo ISD for 3 years provided me an opportunity to realize the significance of vertical alignment. It was my privilege to work as Senior Program Manager for the Office of Statewide Initiatives at Texas Education Agency for 3 years when reading research was first translated into effective reading strategies. I also appreciated working with Texas Early Education Model (TEEM) when Dr. Susan Landry initiated the Getting School Ready program for preschoolers. The highlight of my career was working with the Central Regional Reading First Technical Assistance Center, housed at UT-Austin, as we provided direct support to multiple state educational agencies during the implementation of the Reading First Initiative. Since 1996, I have continued to provide professional development focused on increasing the knowledge and skills of teachers so they can help all students be successful. During the 2013-14 school year, I got to practice what I preached as I taught 4th grade English Language Arts and Reading. I no longer want to work full time, but would be glad to tutor!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have over 21 years teaching experience with students who have been identified as having ADD/ADHD. I have also individually tutored many students who needed modified assignments, but most of all teaching that scaffolded their learning. Scaffolded instruction needs to constantly shift with the quality and quantity of instructional support the student needs.

I have provided direct instruction in the classroom for 21 years; served as a K-12 Language Arts Supervisor for 3 years; managed projects in the Office of Statewide Initiatives at the Texas Education Agency for 3 years; and worked as a Field Analyst/Professional Development provider for a large federally funded grant with 17 states (through UT-Austin) for 3 years. I have also worked with multiple school districts and states as an education specialist/consultant with my own company, Reading Instruction Company for the last 9 years. Currently, I am substituting in some schools in Temple ISD and in St. Mary's Catholic School in Temple. During the last 15 years, I have also taught Reading and Language Arts classes to upper classmen at University of Houston Victoria and at Texas A&M Central Texas.
My credentials include a Masters in Education and Professional Reading Specialist certification. I enjoy working with students who need extra attention. I believe they can be as successful as others, just with some additional support. clarification, and instruction.
