I've been through it all, including earning a PhD and enjoying a rewarding career. Based on my broad experience and deep love of learning, I've passed on what I learned to countless young people. Now I would like to help you achieve your goals, too.
If you're in grades 7-12, i tutor math through Algebra II, language and writing, reading and vocabulary, and most social sciences (especially history, government, and geography). I can also assist you with research guidance and college application essays. I offer tutoring for the SAT, ACT, CLEP, TSI, and GRE exams. (My GRE scores were both above 700, the equivalent of about 165 using today's scoring system, so I know what it takes to excel.) I also tutor and help students prepare for the exams in AP Statistics, Human Geography, US Government and Politics, and Environmental Science. If you're in college, you can turn to me for help with basic statistics and research advice.
Regardless of your age, I can assist in sharpening your writing skills, building your vocabulary, and improving your use of the English language. As a writer, I have a long history of A papers, and I was the "go-to" writer in every job I had. College teaching sharpened my ability to evaluate the writing of others. One of my specialties now is essay-writing, but I can help with everything from class reports to dissertations. Regardless of your age, I can assist you in sharpening your writing skills, expanding your vocabulary, and improving your use of the English Language.
And I don't just tutor -- I also mentor: If you have questions about how to navigate school or college, need help sorting through university choices, or want to enhance your study skills, I'm there for you.
I would live to put my career's worth of knowledge and wisdom to work for you . But I have to hear from you first. Please feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns. I'll be happy to talk to you about your goals and ambitions. Thanks! I've been through it all, including earning a PhD and enjoying a rewarding career. Based on my broad experience and deep love of learning, I've passed on what I learned to countless young people. Now I would like to help you achieve your goals, too.

I highly recommend Joyce L. as a tutor. She is very knowledgeable, patient and doesn't give up on the student if they don't understand at first. She's very dependable and prompt, comes very prepared and is a very nice, kind and warm person. She tutored my son for his SAT's and I'm excited to see his score improve! My son says he is very confident he will improve his scores by a lot due to her services. Thank you Ms. Joyce!
She is able to break a problem down for full understanding. Joyce makes me comfortable to ask questions. She has a lot of patients and it's not rushing through problems.
Joyce has been helping my son with SAT prep. She is prompt, professional and personable. She and my son schedule 1 1/2 hour sessions and my son remains engaged and focused the entire time. Joyce seems to understand teenagers and uses her intellect and wisdom to tackle the daunting test. I - and my son - would highly recommend Joyce for tutoring.
Joyce is an amazing teacher. I just went back to school after 20 years out so going back to math subjects has been especially hard. Joyce has that special gift of explaining in simple ways and 'telling the story about it' so you really understand it. I highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
One of my primary subjects is ACT Math, and the level of math tested in the SAT is largely the same, although the two tests differ slightly in format. Both exams test math subjects up to and including Algebra II, trigonometry, and basic statistics (probability and descriptives). Statistics and Algebra Ii are also two of my primary subjects.)
As a tutor who prepares students to succeed on the SAT and ACT, my ability to teach all of the math topics they cover is critical. Algebra II is especially important because it tests students' knowledge of theoretical concepts, prepares them to deal with complex problems, and asks them to apply multiple skills in context. I tutor all aspects of the subject, including functions, coordinate geometry, basic trigonometry, basic probability, and descriptive statistics.
When I decided to return to school for my PhD, my math skills were rusty, and - although I have always had strong reading skills and was the "go-to" writer at my workplace - I wanted to understand what would be asked of me on the GRE. I spent many hours preparing for the test, and the results speak for themselves. My scores (under the old scoring system, which used the same scale as the SAT) were a combined 120 points higher than my SAT scores years before. I can't guarantee you the 97th percentile, but I WILL help you raise your scores significantly.
The SAT covers math topics from pre-Algebra through Algebra II, trigonometry, and basic statistics (descriptive summary and probability). As my profile indicates, I also specialize in Algebra Ii and statistics. In my professional discipline (urban planning), I was routinely called upon to use math and all verbal skills, and I mentored dozens of junior colleagues still learning the field.
I have been tutoring all aspects of the SAT (and ACT) for nearly a decade. I was well-prepared for this In my professional discipline, I was called upon to write and edit documents of all kinds, and I had my own business teaching others how to improve their own writing. What I learned through this experience enables me to help my students organize and write strong, purpose-driven essays for the college-entrance exams.
As a PhD in the social sciences, I have taught statistics many times (in urban planning and education). My dissertation and subsequent research used statistics extensively. I now tutor basic college statistics as well as AP Statistics. Please note: I prefer not to tutor business or engineering statistics.
In my professional and academic careers, I was routinely called upon to produce documents of many kinds, from plans and issue analyses to book and literature reviews. Over time, I became a sought-after writer and editor. I learned early on that planning and organization are every bit as important as putting words and sentences together. These skills apply whether a young student is tackling that first essay or a PhD candidate is tring to produce the all-important dissertation.
