About Richard

I won first prize for writing at the 2009 Texas Academic Decathlon, an achievement recognized by the Houston Chronicle. Since then, I've taught English abroad under a South Korean government scholarship, proofread two books by an esteemed Harvard professor, and published my own writings in the Columbia Daily Spectator and the New York Times. And now, aside from tutoring, I'm drafting the first of two test prep books for the redesigned SAT.

As a tutor, I adopt a teaching approach that incorporates these experiences in such a way that best identifies and addresses the learning needs of my students. As a proponent of active learning, I employ vivid examples and memorable analogies to promote long-term retention, encourage consistent and meaningful practice to solidify mastery, and deliver regular and detailed feedback to measure progress.

Ultimately, I aim to help students discover a true and lasting love of reading and writing that will not only empower them to meet their short-term academic goals but also mold them into insightful and meaningful thinkers.

I am available to tutor—in addition to English grammar and composition generally—SAT Writing, SAT/ACT Essay, SAT/ACT Reading, and ACT English. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Having been diagnosed with and treated for ADHD-C, I appreciate many of the academic challenges that commonly confront students with ADHD. Indeed, my own personal struggles as a young student with ADHD have largely inspired my general teaching philosophy. As a tutor, I always strive to explain subjects—especially difficult, intricate, or counterintuitive subjects—simply, concisely, and engagingly, and I regularly evoke illustrative examples and memorable analogies to not only invite interest but also facilitate long-term retention. But most importantly, I always aim to identify each student's unique learning difficulties and to tailor thoughtful, individualized, and practical solutions for overcoming them.

Writing

As a high school student, I scored perfectly on the SAT Reading and Writing sections and placed 1st in Writing at the Texas Academic Decathlon, an achievement for which I was recognized by the Houston Chronicle. In college, I proofread two major publications by Harvard University Professor Gregory Nagy and published my own writings in the Columbia Daily Spectator and the New York Times.
