Whether you are currently taking a class in high school, took some Spanish years ago and need to brush up on your skills, or need to prepare for a trip, business, or want to be able to converse, understand recipes, or watch movies in Spanish, I can help you develop fluency. Perhaps you want a unique family learning experience, or you need to prepare for the AP, teacher certification, or a semester exam.
Now retired, I have taught all levels of Spanish and ESOL and over my career I have ample experience at all age groups, including elementary, middle school, high school, community college, university, and adults. I can clarify and simplify grammar problems you may be having. I use a variety of strategies which focus on real language applications and performance so that my students can develop true fluency and apply their skills in the real world, based on their specific purpose for the language. I integrate cultural understanding appropriate for those purposes, whether academic, business, or personal goals including travel, cooking, or building communication. I encourage the integration of all language communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking ) but will gladly focus on any area where you might need special attention. I have excellent results in helping prepare students for Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Spanish Literature and Culture exams.
I can assess weak areas related to prior skills and knowledge, and do a survey of needs and preferences for strategies. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I can be flexible within reason, and with sufficient notice can change a class time to accommodate special circumstances.
I have studied the Spanish language in depth. I initially learned Spanish through immersion in life in Colombia, and have experienced the struggle to survive with a new language. I have lived in Mexico, travelled to various Spanish speaking countries and gained even more insight into language acquisition. I am certified in Spanish and in ESOL, as well as holding a Bilingual certificate and certification as a translator and interpreter.
Besides certification, I served on the AP Spanish Test Development committee for over 6 years, and participated in writing the criteria for the current AP exams, and have reviewed questions for the SAT 2 for Spanish. I have scored the AP Spanish Literature exam for the past 16 years. I give presentations to educators at state and national conventions every year, as well as scoring teacher certification essays and oral presentations for Spanish. I am doing research to write instructional texts. I am currently the president of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. (AATSP)
I look forward to hearing from you, so that I can help you reach your goals of language fluency and cultural understanding! Whether you are currently taking a class in high school, took some Spanish years ago and need to brush up on your skills, or need to prepare for a trip, business, or want to be able to converse, understand recipes, or watch movies in Spanish, I can help you develop fluency. Perhaps you want a unique family learning experience, or you need to
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
