About Peter

I come to tutoring after a career as a computer programmer and manager at a large Wall Street firm based in New York City. During this time I trained many in the programs and systems I developed - early days Cobol and mainframe - more recently MS Access programming in a world-wide PC network.

Since my retirement in 2008, I earned certification to teach Math in Texas (grades 4 thru 12) - and have done so as a substitute teacher and private tutor. I have seen a pattern emerge where students fall behind in the early years and become convinced they "just don't get it". I strongly believe that, with skillful teaching and the motivation that a 1 to 1 tutoring situation offers, a student can catch-up and enter the classroom on a par with or actually ahead of most of the class.

It is a great feeling to have fellow-students ask you for help instead of you have to ask (or worse still, giving up). I think my experience in business combined with my educational work since retirement, allows me to offer a unique tutoring experience - and can make the learning experience fun and successful. Hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have completed the Texas Teachers Certification exam for Math Grades 9-12. In addition, I attempt, where possible, to tie my work into the latest exam requirements as posted by the student's school (currently STAAR). My goal is to both help the student learn the material AND be prepared for the testing process.

Algebra 2

I have passed the Texas Teachers Certification exams in Algebra 4-8 and 8-12. I also have experience teaching both as a sub teacher and privately.

ASVAB

I am a college grad with teaching certification in Math and include electronics and reading as hobbies. These combine to allow me to assist in prep work for the ASVAB.

COBOL

I am now retired but have 20+ years experience working in an IBM batch and online mainframe environment. These environments used COBOL in a batch overnight processing cycle (payroll) and an online (CICS) environment. This has given me extensive experience in COBOL program design, coding, debugging and production installation.

Computer Science

I graduated from Fordham University with a degree in computer management. I have programmed in Assembler, Fortran, Cobol, and others. Before retiring I specialized in Microsoft Access in a global setting (processing 1+ billion dollars per day. I have designed, written and supported many systems during my career (now retired) and have taught programming to many of those reporting to me. In retirement I currently support 2 web-sites.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a college degree and have recently retired after 25 years working on Wall Street. For the last 3 years I have been a Substitute Teacher in Texas and have passed the certification exams in Algebra 4-8 and 8-12. In addition, I have privately tutored several people in Math and assisted in the learning lab as a sub teacher in the Springtown ISD.

Elementary Math

I know that to teach Elementary Math involves more than the material itself. I will build student self-confidence, emphasize good technique (organized use of material, neat writing and more). Most important is practice - which helps build confidence and makes those pop quizzes and tests a breeze.

Microsoft Access

My last 10 years (prior to retirement in 2008) was developing global applications in Microsoft Access and related technologies on Wall Street. I have trained many co-workers and end-users in application design, database management and interface between desktop and mainframe systems. I have, in retirement, developed several systems for personal use and for local business use. This includes both web and access-based systems for my local church.

Prealgebra

I have completed the Texas Teachers Certification exam for Math Grades 4-8 and 9-12. Through working with students as a substitute teacher, I found that the most important thing is to ensure that a student believe in themselves and their ability to "get it". This involves learning the material, practice and knowing how to test well in it. The summer is the ideal time to start this process - it can be painless and position the student to enter the new school-year on solid, confident footing.

Study Skills

I am a college graduate now retired from a career in computers and management on Wall Street. During my work career I participated in Big Brothers and now assist in our church's after-school program. I help elementary and middle-school students in their homework with particular focus on reading, writing and math study skills. I have passed the Texas certification for Math (4 through 8 and 9 through 12) but for this work, the ability to encourage the confidence of the student in what they are capable of is most important.
