I relocated to Texas after having taught/tutored in northern Virginia and Massachusetts. My primary teaching and tutoring experiences have been with upper elementary/intermediate students (fifth and sixth graders), and middle school/junior high students. My specialization has been teaching math from fifth to seventh grade students and I have taught everything from traditional math to accelerated math (2 - 3 years in 1 year) and Pre-Algebra.
My students have been very successful in retaining their math learning and performing well on standardized tests. I also take pride in teaching students to feel confident enough to take some risks in their math learning while also appreciating the opportunities to learn from their mistakes.
I have been teaching and/or tutoring middle grades (4th - 8th grade) for 19 years. I have taught everything from elementary to remedial to gifted/accelerated math (2 or 3 years in 1 year) to Pre-Algebra. I believe a student's success in math is found in understanding their individual math learning style and creating an environment that is conducive to how the student learns best from his/her experiences. My students have been extremely successful in their understanding, acquisition and transference of math concepts to real world applications.
I am Hispanic. I tested out of Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 in college. Due to my ease with the language, I have been able to help others find success in their Spanish learning.
In graduate school, I was required to develop and implement classes in all core content areas for students in upper elementary, intermediate and junior high years. The intentionality in the curriculum development required me to focus on how young students learn best. Throughout the years, I have learned to apply strategies and practices that help students find success in their learning by teaching them to simplify concepts and find meaning appropriate to specific age groups and learning styles.
I embrace teaching and developing students. I take great pride in providing them with the skills, strategies and tools necessary to become independent and successful learners.
I look forward to the opportunity of providing a positive learning environment based on your individual needs. I relocated to Texas after having taught/tutored in northern Virginia and Massachusetts. Brenda was very patient and knowledgeble in both Spanish and Math. I particularly liked the way she was able to identify with my son's learning preferences and break the subject matter up in a way that he could understand!
As a middle grades teacher who has taught in several states, my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction (in all core content areas in grades 4-8) and specialization in upper elementary math to Pre-Algebra, have enabled me to see the unparalleled benefits of providing individualized support to students based on their specific learning styles.
I have tutored students outside of school, before school, after school, and during lunch to provide them with the tailored support needed to see them thrive in their math learning. I have also had the pleasure to work with a variety of students, to include: those on IEPs, gifted students, English Language Learners/ELL and/or ESOL students, economically disadvantaged, or academically and/or behaviorally challenged students and what I have found is that when I give the students an opportunity to experience learning through self-discoveries, whether directed and/or undirected activities, they meet and usually exceed my expectations.
Because I have a very hands on, interactive and inquiry based approach to teaching, I know that I can bring learning opportunities and experiences to homeschooled students that will further develop their abilities and boost their confidence.
Lastly, as a Hispanic, I am very comfortable teaching and guiding students through Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 classes. I can simplify the lessons, so the learners feel confidence in their abilities to understand and apply the language.
