About LAURA

I have been an elementary and middle school teacher since 1996 and a Houstonian since I was in the First Grade! I attended public schools in Klein, Cy-Fair, Katy, and Spring, and taught in Dallas public schools. I am a graduate of the University of Houston. I have taught 1st-6th grades and all subjects. I love music and play several instruments: recorder, ukulele, guitar and piano and love to share them with children.

I have been a co-founder and board member of two different private schools. I am certified in Waldorf Elementary Education through Antioch University New England. I hold a Texas Teaching Certificate with a lifetime endorsement in Grades 1-6 and Grade 1-8 in specialty areas of English and History and currently I teach Third Grade at Great Oak School in Tomball.

I also love crafting of all kinds. I sew, knit, crochet, and cross-stich. My interests are broad and what I like about tutoring is how well you get to know your students by working with them one-on-one.

I love English, writing, and children's literature. I love books. Bookstores and libraries are my favorite places. I enjoy journal writing, poetry writing, writing and making up stories, and non-fiction. I currently write 2 blogs, one for my class, and one that is education-related.

My approach to reading instruction is multi-sensory. I like to use the Logic of English curriculum and The Writing Road to Reading by Spalding, in addition to real life interests of the students and what they are passionate about.

Handwriting is very important and often under-emphasized in whole-class instruction. Handwriting habits will follow a child for a lifetime and must be formed with care.

I am sensitive to my students individual needs and I really enjoy working one-on-one with all ages. I am a good observer and sometimes I can intuitively pick up on what a young person needs. My expertise and background are both diverse. I love to make learning fun and meaningful for a student.

Though I am not degreed in Music, I have been a student of guitar since 1992 and have had many private teachers over the years. My approach with guitar and ukulele is sharing my love ad joy of music with my students, to encourage and build confidence, and help students to find the joy in learning and making music. I can help beginners on guitar and ukulele.

I am available during the summers, weekends, and after school hours on select days and times.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a degreed and Texas-certified elementary teacher. I am experienced in teaching 1st-6th grades in all subjects. I have attended many additional trainings and workshops in reading instruction and in writing.

Elementary Math

I have been an elementary teacher since 1996. I have taught all subjects including math up through 6th grade/pre-algebra. I like to make subjects fun, practical, hands-on and whenever possible artistic or exciting.

Guitar

I am qualified to teach beginning to intermediate guitar and ukulele. I can teach technique, basic fingerpicking, basic chords, scales, strumming, and singing/playing simultaneously. I first started playing guitar 25 years ago and have had many teachers who inspired me over the years. I especially enjoy playing folk music and songs that everyone knows and loves to hear, sing, and play together.

Handwriting

I find that handwriting is often not taught well in schools and children suffer as a result. Often a child just needs one-on-one feedback and encouragement. Sometimes children are even stigmatized when they have simply not had sufficient instruction or practice in handwriting. I have used a variety of handwriting programs such as Handwriting Without Tears and The Writing Road to Reading by Spalding. I can teach cursive or print or both. I have used D'Neilan, Italic Cursive, Vimala and many other styles of handwriting and can make recommendations to you or use what is preferred by their school.

Homeschool

I homeschooled my sons from kindergarten through 2nd grade. I enjoy working with homeschool students and admire their flexibility and drive to learn, they usually think outside the box and because I have taught all subjects I think I would be an ideal tutor for a homeschool student.

Needlework

I can teach beginning knitting, beginning crochet, and beginning sewing.

Phonics

Phonics instruction goes hand in hand with other forms of Language instruction. My students are explicitly taught the sounds and how they blend in a systematic way. I have used several my own blending of different methods including The Logic of English and The Writing Road to Reading by Spalding. (Both can be found online.)

Reading

Depending on how your child is doing in Reading I can tailor my approach to meet his/her needs. I recently took a course from Neuhaus in Automatic and Effortless Decoding. But I also blend structured and interest-based approaches to make it fun for the student.

Social Studies

My undergraduate teaching specializations were English and History. I have taught Social Studies in public school at the 6th Grade level both for GT students and regular education students.

Study Skills

I have had to teach myself many subjects over the years and have been successful in my own educational endeavors through higher education. Study skills is a broad term and could include many things to many people, but to me it implies how to organize oneself for success in classroom/learning goals, how to structure one's time, how to study for a test, how to improve your own learning of material. How this would be taught would be very individual to the student and their age/class.

Writing

I have taken writing courses with InPrint Houston and studied storytelling. My undergraduate specializations were in English and History. I write stories, poems, blogs, and non-fiction.
