About Jonathan

In 2015 I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Classics. To my
university’s standards I reached the highest levels of undergraduate proficiency in Latin and
Classical Greek languages. While at my university I also participated as a student in the Gareth
Morgen Summer Intensive Greek program, in which we are exposed to reading Classical Greek
within the first ten days of this course learning by a linguistic approach rather than textbook
memorization, and over the course of the ten-week class, we are exposed to nearly two years of
course work. Within my years of studying Classics at the university I became known amongst
the Classics faculty and students as one of the best students of Ancient Greek at the university,
and my Latin was not far behind. My enthusiasm for the subject may be found in the countless
minutes spent after most of my Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilization and History classes
talking with my professors about subject matter or linguistic phenomena that I found interesting
in the languages. I spent time after these classes for the sake of wisdom and furthering my
growing, insatiable interest in these subjects, especially the languages.

After I graduated I worked with a program called Young Adults in Global Mission. Through this
program I spent one year abroad working in Szarvas, a small town in southeastern Hungary. I
taught English at a primary school and Religion/Philosophy class at a secondary school, for which I created the curriculum that academic year. Teaching in a foreign country taught me
many things. I quickly learned how to become friendly and amicable with the students and how
to empathize with their learning processes, which is to say that I gained a strong situational
awareness as a teacher in the classroom. Not all students speak up when something doesn’t
make sense, and this situational awareness taught me how to gauge whether something made
sense or did not, which can happen often when there is a language barrier. I attended most of
the school related events outside of the classroom, such as the annual gala, holiday-related events, and I even played music in a rock band with some of the students for the end-of-the year student performance. In addition to teaching I spent time becoming acclimated the
community there, which shows my ability to easily adapt to new and oftentimes uncomfortable
situations. I spent time attending seminars in and around Hungary on European history and
present-day issues, significantly increasing my perspective as a global citizen, which is useful
as a teacher of any subject.

I stand out as a grammar tutor because I read Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar and Smyth's Greek Grammar for the sake of interest and knowledge in my free time.

I am qualified in European History according to the certificate received from my university in European Studies.

I've been playing music in bands and alone for over thirteen years.

Contact me about tutoring in Latin and Greek. I assure you that you will understand the language and you will do better on exams if that's the reason for why you are seeking a tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Greek

My Greek is better than my Latin and I passed Wyzant's Latin exam. I have tutored more in Greek. I can teach Greek from two different perspectives. One is the textbook approach. The other is a linguistic approach. I am more well versed in reading different dialects of Greek. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Classics. To my university’s standards I reached the highest levels of undergraduate proficiency in Latin and Classical Greek languages.
