About Steven

I have a Ph.D. in Engineering (Texas A&M, 1983) which included 30+ graduate hours of math. My expertise is in numerical modeling of non-linear PDEs which involves the solution of discretized domains via linear algebra techniques. Linear PDEs are easier as they permit superposition solutions.

I have been teaching classes and seminars from elementary to college level for over 40 years. I believe in adapting to everyone's pace, strength, and interest. Learning is a life-long process. Learn everything you can - you never know what will be useful later on.

I am a big believer in the theory of multiple intelligences. The key to individual learning is to understand your natural abilities and strengths with respect to the various intelligences. It isn't as important whether you agree or not with the theory. I simply use it to find the best ways that a student can relate to the material.

My passion is for math of all kinds. I lean towards the more practical mathematics vs. more theoretical. I like real examples that I can relate to. Generally students also need an anchor to relate the more abstract concepts. Sometimes just as important is understanding why you need to learn something. Where will I use this in real life?

When I am not working as an engineer I devote my time to non-profit agencies including a theatre company and AARP (tax preparation). I write a monthly newsletter and conduct video interviews to promote live theatre. Traveling and seeing Broadway shows are my other passions. My favorite trip so far has been from Budapest to Nuremberg (great food, incredible hospitality, fun guests).

Teaching has always been and continues to be a challenging exercise. What is the best way to ensure that a student learns what he/she needs to be successful in their field of study? There are many tactics we can use to encourage a student to learn. Ultimately it is up to them to take hold of the opportunities presented.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I have a Ph.D. in Engineering (Texas A&M, 1983) which included 30+ graduate hours of math. My expertise is in numerical modeling of non-linear PDEs which involves the solution of discretized domains via linear algebra techniques. Linear PDEs are easier as they permit superposition solutions.

Fortran

We have been programming in Fortran (all versions to Fortran 95) since 1981 on anything from microcomputers to high performance clusters (HPC). The largest codes exceed 250k lines. The last code we wrote was on a Cray XE6 using both Intel and Cray Fortran compilers.

Linear Algebra

I have a Ph.D. in Engineering (Texas A&M, 1983) which included 30+ graduate hours of math. My expertise is in numerical modeling of PDEs which involves the solution of discretized domains via linear algebra techniques.

Tax Preparation

We currently working with AARP and are qualified at the advanced level for tax preparation. We have been doing personal, corporate, and non-profit taxes via TurboTax for the past 20+ years.

Video Production

We have been creating promotional videos for the Crighton Theatre on youtube using Adobe Premiere CS5+ for 4 years. The effort involves multi-camera edits, sound reprocessing, and chroma key effects. We have practical experiences with video editing for non-profit organizations.
