Bucknell University (Elementary Education)
I taught elementary school for many years in Loudoun County, Virginia, one of the nation's leading school districts. I love working individually with students and being able to focus all of my energy on creating a plan that best suits that child. Private tutoring is a wonderful way for a child to progress in whatever areas necessary, moving at his or her own pace, with the lessons designed to do exactly what is individually needed. I enjoy building a positive relationship with each student and doing all that I can to both ensure his or her success and make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
While instructing heterogeneously-grouped third and fourth grade students in all subject areas, I developed and implemented a classroom management system which provided for differences in individual learning abilities. In addition to my classroom experience, I worked as a reading instructor for students in kindergarten through third grade. l have served as grade-level team leader, taken part in a collaborative learning team, and participated in a positive behavioral instructional support team. I served on committees that wrote curriculum for district-wide use and provided training for new fourth grade teachers throughout the Loudoun County school district. Along with teaching, I wrote a children's novel that was reviewed favorably by Kirkus and Writer's Digest.
I have extensive experience working with struggling readers, through my service as a Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) tutor for seven years in the Loudoun County Public Schools. I have also worked with hundreds of third and fourth grade students of varying reading levels in my classroom. Along with my experience in school settings, I have worked as a private reading tutor for students ranging in age from kindergarten through high school.
I am encouraging and supportive of my students and have much experience making learning fun and incorporating games into learning. I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child grow in both skills and confidence! I have always enjoyed learning and knew that I wanted to be a teacher from a young age. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I taught at a school with a wonderful principal who researched the best practices in elementary mathematics instruction and shared them with his staff. Our students consistently scored exceptionally well on the state tests, and I truly enjoy helping students in this area.
I have successfully taught grammar to students in elementary school for many years. I have also privately tutored students in middle school and high school in writing and grammar. Additionally, I have written professionally for a newspaper and published a children's novel that received favorable reviews.
I have worked with elementary students of all ages on both printing and cursive. When teaching handwriting, I pay special attention to legibility, size, spacing, and formation of letters. I have experience with D'Nealian and the transition to cursive.
I worked as the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) Tutor in two Loudoun County, VA, elementary schools for a total of seven years. PALS is a program developed by the University of Virginia that monitors young readers' phonics development. I assisted struggling students both individually and in small groups and worked on skills such as letter to sound relationship, beginning, middle, and ending blends and diagraphs, word families, and spelling. My students experienced much success.
I have successfully taught reading to elementary school students, both in the classroom and as a reading instructor. I worked as the Phonological Awareness Screening Tutor at two Virginia elementary schools for students in kindergarten through third grade, and I also have extensive experience preparing students for rigorous state testing. My approach is to make learning fun and build student confidence while teaching phonics, building fluency, and developing higher-level reading comprehension skills.
In my fourth grade classroom, we had a study skills unit as part of our curriculum. I worked with the students on organization, reading across the curriculum, time management, note-taking, test preparation, and test-taking strategies. I have worked with many students of various ages in these areas.
