About Arielle

I'm a college graduate with a BA from Flagler College. My degree is in English Literature with minors in Psychology and Creative Writing. Right now I'm also going through the application process to gain my MFA in Creative Writing; it's my goal to teach Creative Writing to students in the future. Currently, I work as an in-school tutor with bilingual students in Elementary school, teaching them writing and reading skills to help them succeed!

I've worked as a writing tutor for two years already during my undergraduate experience at Flagler. As a tutor in the Learning Resource Centre, I worked very closely with a number of students who were falling behind in their classes. This allowed me to have hands-on involvement with every aspect of the writing and editing process as a staff member and a teacher to younger students. As a tutor, I taught grammar and composition, and led students on how to outline and write an academic paper from beginning to end. I also was chosen for extracurricular tutoring for students with learning disabilities and physical handicaps. At the LRC I often took on students who did not know the necessary skills for Composition 101, and taught them over the semester so that they could become competent writers and readers.

I have a firm grasp on AP/APA/MLA/Chicago styles, as well as on the best way to teach students how to plan, outline, write, and revise a good paper. As a writing tutor I didn't simply edit student's papers, but taught them the basic elements of outlining, writing, and revising a paper from the ground up. My background in literature also allows me to give lessons on middle and high school reading curriculum, and help teach different literary elements (metaphor, plot, and other devices) to students of all ages.

The way I like to tutor is by talking to the student and parent about the best way they learn (through auditory or visual learning) and then tailor my approach based on that. During the first session I'll see where your student's level of comprehension is by talking to them about what they've learned so far and what they do and do not understand, and work a lesson plan around that. I don't assign extra homework, but if you want I'm happy to write up small tests and quizzes to help your student prepare for exams. Generally I tutor high school students but I'm also capable of helping any age up to the college level.

Because of my minors and my experience living overseas, I am also qualified to help students with psychology classes (especially AP and IB Psychology) as well as Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, and speaking.)

I'd love to see how I can help you out! Feel free to shoot me an email if you are interested in tutoring with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I grew up in Shanghai, China and Taipei, Taiwan, where I learnt Mandarin both in school and as a part of living in the culture. Though I now live in the US again I practice my skills every day to keep up to date.
