About Robin

I have been teaching school for 23 years. My formal experience is in 2nd-5th grades, but I love the Middle/Jr. High math curriculum and that tends to be what I tutor the most. I have recently been tutoring for the Math GED and really enjoyed it. While my specialty is in Math, I have dyslexia training, GT certification, and a Special Education certification. I have had superb test scores in the years that I have been at a state testing grade level. I have vast experience with high-functioning autism and Asperger's (my son has). I have a Master's in School Counseling.

I have four children of my own ages 14-23. I have run a summer camp for young women ages 12-18 for 5 of the last 7 years. I understand little kids and am really good at getting them to master things that they have previously had trouble with.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

My experience in the classroom gives me vast experience with this. I also have 2 children with ADHD. I know how to set up boundaries and teach in small chunks. High expectations are essential. I also have attended numerous workshops on ADHD to help them be more successful in the classroom.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My son has Asperger's and since I have this experience, each year at school all the students with this diagnosis or autism anywhere on the spectrum are given to me. They thrive in my classroom because I get "what makes them tick". I have also attended district and state conventions on autism awareness and how to help them in the classroom. I have also taught workshops on helping the autistic/Asperger's child be successful in the regular ed. classroom.

Career Development

I have a Master's Degree in School Counseling. Several of my courses were on Career and Vocational Development. These courses were to enable me to direct students in their vocational needs. I was taught how to use different online profiles to help students choose an area they may be interested in. The goal is to direct them to an area of interest and then they can narrow it down as they begin particular programs. Sometimes the goal is to help someone improve in the career path they are already on. My goals would be to help clients become the most successful employees that they can be.

College Counseling

I have a Master's Degree in School Counseling. Several of my courses were on Career and Vocational Develpment. These courses were to enable me to direct students in their vocational needs. I also regularly assist high school seniors and adults returning to school to navigate all the needed paperwork to begin college. I also help them write their schedules to match their degree plan.

Common Core

I have extensive experience in reading and understanding objectives. I have tutored extensively privately and with Wyzant in both Math and Reading. I serve on my schools implementation of objectives committee and help come up with ways to better implement these in our daily curriculum.

Dyslexia

I have received the Dyslexia Intervention Program training both in my old district and in Klein ISD. This is an intense phonics intervention program. I also know how to use the Saxon phonics program and the Workshop Way Phonics program.

Elementary (K-6th)

My certification covers all subjects grades 1-6. As an elementary teacher I have always taught self-contained so I have learned to cover all topics. Teaching in a self-contained classroom requires you to be familiar with lots of topics in all content areas. I have 22 hours of college science, 33 hours of college math, 15 hours of college reading (including dyslexia), 18 hours of college history, and 18 hours of college English. I am qualified in all elementary subject areas.

Elementary Math

I have 33 hours of college math. I have also tutored this subject matter for years. I worked in a Title I Math Lab. I have assisted in writing several district math curriculums.

Elementary Science

I have 22 hours of college science in multiple disciplines. In elementary, we "cover it all". These variations allow me to know a little about all of it to better help the students.

Grammar

I have 18 hours of college English, in addition to having been trained in the Shurley Method of Grammar. I proof papers for college students often.

Handwriting

I am training in both the Handwriting without Tears and D'Nealian forms of writing.

Phonics

The Dyslexia program I am trained in is a phonics program. I also know how to use a much older program called Workshop Way Phonics. I also use the Saxon Phonics program in my class. As an early elementary teacher, phonics is key to a student's reading success.

Prealgebra

I have 33 hours of college math. I have also tutored this subject matter for years. I have now put 4 of my own children through this content. I have assisted in writing several district math curriculums.

Reading

I have 18 hours of college reading methodology, in addition to dyslexia certification. I have also worked in a Title I Math lab. Teaching reading does require processes and a systematic approach.

Special Needs

I have a special education certification. I often get special needs kids because I believe even they can learn and progress.

Spelling

When being trained for Dyslexia, spelling is a big component. It is no longer acceptable for students to just memorize a list of words. The spelling patterns need to be taught so that a child can spell a word he has not memorized. I know these rules and patterns.

STAAR

I currently teach 5th grade, but have extensive experience with grades 3-8, especially in the areas of reading and math. I have had next to no students fail the STAAR over the years it has been given. I am really good at testing strategies and helping students to implement them for success. Many students who do not do well on these tests do not do well because of a lack of ability or knowledge, but rather from test anxiety or not having been taught strategies on how to approach this type of test. I feel that most students can experience success on the STAAR with the correct interventions.

Study Skills

I have raised 4 children. According to them I am the Homework Nazi. I know how to give kids strategies to help them be successful and become lifelong learners. Most students want to do well, they just need to be given some tools to help them. Some kids need longer modeling with these tools than other. Study skills strategies are essential to a student's success. These have to be taught. Very few kids acquire this independently. Teaching these skills early will ensure later success.

TAKS

I currently teach 5th grade, but have extensive experience with grades 3-8. I had no students fail the TAKS in the years it was given. I am really good at testing strategies and helping students to implement them for success.

Vocabulary

Throughout all of my reading trainings, teaching Vocabulary has been a component. Vocabulary is much more than the rote teaching of a word; it is true mastery of the understanding of the word.

Awesome teacher!

So great at teaching clearly and gives so much confidence to the student she's teaching! She goes above and beyond! Just last night my son called her to ask a question and she walked him though step by step! She's so awesome!
