About Suzy

Before leaving the classroom, I taught first grade for 24 years. This was a great foundation for what would come later, as first grade is a foundation for all reading and math skills. How to make learning interesting, fun, and relevant is critical to creating success for young learners. I was able to take students that were very young and build higher-level thinking skills, an understanding of literary elements, and comprehension skills that helped them become life-long learners and readers. In math, we were able to make connections that laid the groundwork understanding algebraic concepts, numeric fluency, and mathematical reasoning that helped young children become mathematically competent and mathematically confident. It was as a first grade teacher that I came to understand so clearly that every child learns differently. The instructional pace and approach must fit each child.
Following this classroom experience, I served as Instructional Specialist, Assistant Principal, and then a Principal for 11 years. Working with teachers to help students, we looked first at what students were able to do, and then looked to find where the gaps were. Using good instruction that integrated various modalities, so that we could appeal to the strength and the interest of each child, we developed and executed plans that built success on success, and brought each child to a level at or above grade level.
My philosophy on tutoring is simple. I build a relationship with the child. I define his/her strengths, and build on those in order to maintain the child's confidence and fill in the gaps that may be causing a struggle. I know that every child learns differently. There is great joy in learning. It is a teacher's job to nurture and maintain that joy.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught first grade for 23 years. I served as an Instructional Specialist and an Assistant Principal for 3 years, before becoming an elementary principal of an Houston ISD elementary school - grades PK-5th - for 11 years. One of my responsibilities was to evaluate and coach teachers in all subjects. I served on many curriculum writing committees, including reading/language arts, gifted curriculum, and social studies. I currently supervise Student Teachers for a University education program.

Handwriting

Handwriting was something we, as a school, made a priority, as we saw that poor handwriting was a hindrance for our students as they got older.

Phonics

As a Principal, I attended training with my K-2 teachers through the Neuhaus program, which relies heavily on the Orton-Gillingham method. We also used Fountas and Pinnell in our classrooms, and I had training through that program as well. I taught first grade for 23 years. I served as an Instructional Specialist and an Assistant Principal for 3 years, before becoming an elementary principal of an Houston ISD elementary school - grades PK-5th - for 11 years. As a first grade teacher, I had extensive training in phonics.

Study Skills

As a teacher, I served on a committee that wrote a scope and sequence for Study Skills, grades K-6. As a Principal, I worked with a Teacher Committee that defined study skills for each grade level. We often reviewed these on individual students that we were reviewing in our Intervention Assistance Team. If Study Skills seemed to be part of the problem, we established ways to teach these skills to the individual student. I taught first grade for 23 years. Excellent Tutor

Suzy is an extremely experienced, extremely patient and extremely capable tutor. Our son loves his tutor sessions with Suzy, and has progressed even more than we hoped. The preparation for the tutor sessions is amazing, and based on actual school work and weaknesses. The best part of working with Suzy are the personal touches and attention she always adds when spending time with our son. She truly
