Chemistry can be a challenging subject for many students due to the conceptual nature of the material. However, once it has been mastered, it can be fun. I am a firm believer that there are no "stupid" questions. Instead, it is a matter of students not completely grasping the material and I encourage them to ask as many questions as necessary until they understand the concepts being covered. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand how chemistry relates to their lives since introductory courses can come across as boring.
I like to use analogies to help explain difficult concepts, and I try to lead students to discover the answer on their own rather than simply providing them with answers to the problems they are working on. Sometimes this will require backing up to review a concept covered earlier in the class in order to master current material. My objective is for students to understand the "why" aspect of the subject instead of simply memorizing facts. If students understand how a concept works, they can apply that knowledge to related problems and solve them on their own, which leads to greater understanding of the subject and fewer mistakes on quizzes and exams.
I have taught and tutored general chemistry & organic chemistry for several years. Unlike most tutors, I have worked as a practicing chemist for ~20 years. In addition I am a licensed chemistry teacher, having completed my student teaching in a college prep chemistry classroom. This unique combination means that I KNOW the subject area, can RELATE concepts to "real world" applications, and UNDERSTAND how to help students improve their mastery over the subject. In addition, I was a mathematics minor in college and this has proven helpful in teaching chemistry since many students also struggle with the math involved in the coursework.
We hired Meg to tutor our daughter who is taking organic chemistry as a pre-pharmacy requirement. Our daughter is an incredibly strong student overall, but was feeling frustrated and began losing her confidence as the course work was progressing. We have hired tutors in the past for our other daughter and believe that a fresh one on one approach is often beneficial in their academic success. Meg has already surpassed our expectations within the first couple meetings with our daughter. In our daughter's words: Meg is incredibly intelligent and a true professional. She gets down to business right away and quickly accesses the student and their needs. She provides a fresh approach, tools, charts, for a clearer understanding and makes her feel comfortable discussing homework questions and test review questions. Our daughter's confidence is already back. Meg is very easy to work with and wonderful about scheduling our daughter around both if their schedules. We are very very happy to have found and hired Meg! Awesome situation for our daughter.Dianna, 6 lessons with Meg
Knows what she is teaching.
Meg helped me go through various types of mechanisms thoroughly and did not hesitate at all to answer my questions no matter how trivial they are. She also helped direct my studies so that I can better prepare for my upcoming ochem two course that I will be taking next semester.Natalya, 2 lessons with Meg

Very helpful even outside of tutoring sessions
Meg was very concise and was willing to debate and challenge my teacher's answer key in order to get the absolute right answer. She also took some time outside of tutoring sessions to follow up on me on my situation and updates regarding my studiesSally, 2 lessons with Meg

Understood What My Son Needed
Meg spent time walking through the notes with my son to understand what he didn't understand. Then, she was able to focus on those weaknesses and help him understand the material.Matt, 5 lessons with Meg

Flexible, caring, and knowledgable tutor
Meg and I have been meeting since the beginning of the school year and I can confidently say that she has been my saving grace in organic chemistry. Not only does she have hands on lab experience, but she also understands all of the mechanisms and reasoning to back up her knowledge. She is willing to do whatever it takes to make me feel comfortable with course material whether that be coaxing me to meet every day for two weeks leading up to the final exam or checking my homework problems on her own time. I couldn't have asked for a more dedicated tutor and I feel so grateful that I have gotten to spend the past eight or so months meeting with her!Madelyn, 51 lessons with Meg
Very knowledgeable Organic Chem tutor
Meg is a great tutor for students struggling in organic chem. We've gone over stereochemistry, mechanisms, and other topics from back in general chem. Her outlook is that "no question is dumb" which is very helpful when studying a completely new subject.Leah, 2 lessons with Meg
