I am the director and a teacher at a church-based K-12 college prep school located on an organic ranch in Seguin, Texas. I have been teaching at-risk, gifted and mainstream children from all over the world for over 30 years. My years of experience have equipped me to empower students to achieve high grades and upper percentile scores on standardized tests. I measure my success according to the number of students who excel, achieve high examination scores and gain admission to top colleges and universities. I enjoy working with all age students, but I especially love working with elementary through middle schoolers. I feel God has gifted me to jumpstart reading, writing and mathematics in young learners in a way that instills a lifelong love of learning.

Our school was recognized by President George W. Bush during his "no child left behind" initiative for achieving extraordinary success in remediating students with poor academic records. My own academic record reflects my love of learning, a gift that is impossible to impart to others unless you have it yourself: I am a graduate of Harvard Law School, J.D., 1981, and a summa cum laude graduate of Hampton University, B. A. Political Science, 1977.

I love math and my love of math is infectious! At every level of instruction, I make sure that students have mastered fundamental math skills. I teach my math students to calculate mentally. I also make sure that they understand the math principals behind the operation they are performing. I teach shortcut calculation techniques that help students to overcome feelings of being intimidated by math. I never forgo an opportunity to demonstrate the relevance of math in the everyday practical world. I encourage students to laugh as they learn, so they relax, understand better and retain more information.

I am able to help students "connect the dots" between principals of sociology and the issues of today regarding social justice, family dynamics, and other group behavior. I am good at teaching students the craft of cr

Prealgebra

I have taught pre-algebra in the US and in the Caribbean to students of every academic range, from special-ed to talented and gifted. My first focus is on skill mastery. Many students have progressed through elementary mathematics without mastery of addition-subtraction and multiplication-division. Honing of skills through teaching mental math is emphasized simultaneously with the teaching of pre-algebra concepts. Each time a new concept is introduced and seems to be understood, it is followed up through word problem applications that simulate the kinds of questions found in college entrance examinations. My classes are lively, often humorous and are intentionally designed to empower students in mathematics. This leads to a deeper understanding and desire to pursue math on more advanced levels.
