About Sam

I am a music lover, and I listen to all kinds of music! Some of my favorite artists include:
Brad Paisley, Madeon, BrassTracks, Drake, Michael Jackson, Tim McGraw, GRiZ, Audrey Assad, Vincent, and the list just goes on and on! I have played the piano and guitar for many years and am active at church playing instruments for the choir.

I maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school, and was ranked 6th in my class, as well as earning the position of student body president. My SAT score was a 2030, and my engineering GPA at Rice was a 3.0. I was Vice President of my High School's National Honor Society, and I have served as a teaching assistant for summer math camps at Rice, as well as a biology class which required me to have office hours where students could come meet with me.

My teaching style focuses on enhancing tools that students already have in order to solve problems, or providing them with new tools to help understand the language of whatever subject they need the most help with. I am a patient teacher who is receptive to the needs of a student. If a student is frustrated and needs assistance, I will not let them struggle for too long so as to not hinder their learning, and provide them an example and an opportunity to try again. I was the head drum major in my school's marching band, and I learned firsthand to balance teaching and practice when facilitating student learning.

I have completed advanced math all the way up to Multivariable and Vector Calculus in engineering applications at Rice University. I have experience with cellular and molecular biology, and am highly interdisciplinary. I've worked in PhD research labs in the medical center in Houston, Texas, and am VERY fond of Neuroscience. My previous research covered immunohistochemical analysis of Huntington's disease in a Drosophila Melanogaster model, where I learned to manipulate genetics and also created my own unique genetic line of flies through a detailed genetic assay. I'm capable of designing custom curricula and working with parents to do whatever best helps students, and am a warm, friendly, and patient tutor. I'm young and relatable, but have the bottom line, student's education in mind!

Please contact me and see if tutoring with me will be a good fit! I would love to help you improve and deepen your understanding of your subjects, as well as inspire you to learn more every day!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

While working in a research lab on Huntington's disease at the University of Texas Health Science Center's Center for Molecular Medicine, I performed genetic assays using recombinant DNA in Drosophila models to create a new genotype, identified by phenotype, in order to study the brain via immunohistochemistry. Using PCR verification we aimed to verify if autophagic mutants with loss of function were worse suited to clearance of aggregate proteins. The assay I performed required tracking genes across 3 generations of crosses, and ensuring the proper outcome was reached. I generated a self sustaining line with balancers, which was unique to the field, and to do this I had to breed and screen 10 flies from 10,000 over the course of the 3 month period that this particular assay ran.
