I love working one-on-one or in small groups with students to give them the individualized attention that will help them soar!! My goal is to profoundly and positively impact the lives of my students and to help each one reach his or her full potential.
My approach to tutoring is to address the individual student’s learning style and to individualize the teaching after assessing the student’s needs. Each individual learns best if the approach to learning is through the preferred learning style and built upon what the learner already knows (as supported by the research literature).
I love to create an atmosphere in which the student builds self-confidence through success. By helping a student to bridge the gap in his or her knowledge and understanding, the student achieves success and then develops the self-confidence to take on greater challenges. Success in learning also creates greater motivation to learn, which promotes engagement by the student in the learning process. Thus, one success builds on another.
I have more than 4 years experience in the educational setting with Dallas ISD, and have tutored reading (comprehension), writing, and math at the elementary level, reading and science at the high school, and math and science at the middle school levels. I am also capable of tutoring reading and writing at the secondary or college level and for SAT. I have a strong command of proper grammar, spelling, and writing skills with an extensive background in writing for many years and am a self-published author and poet. I also write recreationally on a blog when time permits. As a graduate student I achieved a 4.0 GPA and my course work required many research papers and other comprehensive writing assignments.
In Dec. 2010 I completed my master's degree in education at TX A&M University-Commerce with a focused emphasis on the learning sciences—how students learn and the best teaching strategies to use based on the recent research. Graduate studies also included teaching strategies for at-risk students and English language learners.
My certifications as a Texas teacher are for K-6 all subjects (generalist), science grades 4-8 and English as a second language K-8. I love working one-on-one or in small groups with students to give them the individualized attention that will help them soar!! My goal is to profoundly and positively impact the lives of my students and to help each one reach his or her full potential.

When I met with Kate for my first sewing lesson I was a little nervous because I had never used a sewing machine before. She immediately put me at ease. She went through the basics in detail and provided step-by step instructions that were easy to follow. If I had a question, she very patiently explained the answer. She is very thorough and knowledgable about sewing and all aspects that go with it!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The ASVAB is a multiple aptitude test that is used by the military to measure one's ability in eight different areas. The results are used to determine eligibility for the US armed forces and to identify best potential occupations for the military candidate. I have first-hand experience with the ASVAB, having taken it prior to my entrance into the US Air Force. The 8 areas that are tested by the ASVAB are: 1) general science, 2) Arithmetic reasoning, 3) Word knowledge, 4) Paragraph comprehension, 5) Math knowledge, 6) Electronics information, 7) Auto and shop information, and 8) Mechanical comprehension. I am a certified teacher with background and experience through college coursework or life experience in all areas of the test. I can provide you with lessons to build your skill levels for each of the aptitudes that are measured by the ASVAB.
I have studied the Bible for about 25 years. During this time I have led Bible studies with adults, high school aged youth, and younger school-aged children. I have had an extensive self-written and designed website for the purpose of mentoring and disciplining others. My passion is to teach the truths in God's word to see others set free and walking in victory because their lives have been transformed by the power of God's word and by the power of God's Holy Spirit! I have received an impartation and anointing to teach God's word. If I were to ask you what one sin in a Christian's life blocks the flow of kingdom power, what would you say? Lack of forgiveness in the life of a believer is the sin that blocks access to the kingdom of God and its wonderful power to live a victorious overcoming life. It is most often a lack of forgiveness that comes between believers and the Lord. I can show you how to get victory in this area of your life. I currently lead Bible study for the high school aged youth at my church. I am considering having a free monthly Bible study in my home on Sunday afternoon or evening if enough people express interest.
I have a strong background in life sciences through my undergraduate degree and also self-study because I think biology rocks! My undergraduate degree included course work in biology, microbiology, and nuclear biology. I have studied ecology because I am very interested in preserving planet Earth. Earth must be healthy to sustain all life forms, and all life forms on the planet are interdependent on each other. (For example, did you know that there are beneficial bacteria in the soil that help plants get the nitrogen and other needed nutrients out of the soil?) Biology is the study of life forms and covers 7 unifying themes. These themes encompass cellular structure plus function, reproduction, metabolism, homeostasis, heredity, evolution, and interdependence. I can take any complex concept in biology and break it down for you so that you can understand and GET IT!
I am a certified generalist teacher for EC-6th grade with a master's degree in elementary education. I have 4 years experience working with elementary children in all subject content. I love to help children go from struggling to soaring!
When I teach math, I like to evaluate the student's comprehension of prerequisite knowledge needed for advanced levels of calculation. For example, when addition and subtraction are being taught, a clear understanding of place value is the prerequisite knowledge for doing addition or subtraction calculations. Using models and hands-on methods of learning math seem to work the best for most elementary aged learners. Thus, I generally use this approach when teaching math.
Science can be fun!! Science is important because it really is an integration of all other subjects. In science we use reading and language arts skills, as well as math skills, and scientific discoveries impact our society. Thus social studies and science are closely linked. I think science rocks and I would love the opportunity to help the struggling science student have fun while learning and to fall in love with science! Many concepts in science can be learned through a hands-on approach and/or experimentation and I use this strategy whenever it is appropriate. Webquests on the computer are another important tool that I like to employ for learning science when appropriate.
My graduate course work involved specialized courses for ESL. I learned teaching strategies for facilitating English language learners to become fluent in the English language. I am an ESL certified teacher and I have used various strategies with English language learners during my 4 years working in education. The schools I have worked in have a high percentage of students whose first language is other than English. Working with these students has required me to be creative with lessons to adapt them to meet the needs of the students.
Whether it is speaking or writing that you need to improve, I can help you achieve your goals. My grammar and writing experience includes extensive writing of poetry and inspirational narratives and am a published author and poet. Additionally, expository writing in high volume was a graduate school requirement for my master's degree in education and I received grades of A and A+ on all writing assignments. I write creatively on a blog as well, when time permits. I am experienced tutoring children and adults to improve speaking, writing, and grammar skills, and can help anyone who needs to take their writing skills to the next level. I can help you understand the correct use of punctuation, how to relate to verb tense and verb-subject agreement, spelling rules, and even how to speak more effectively in English.
Having over 18 years MS Windows experience, I am familiar with the changes that Windows has gone through over the years. Whether you are running an older version like XP or are currently using Windows 7, one of the most helpful features to be familiar with is the Windows explorer. I can help you optimize your ability to use Windows explorer, or any other feature of Windows.
I have over 40 years experience in needlework. I also am skilled doing macrame. Embroidery, needlepoint, hand sewing of lace, pearl strings, and other beautiful embellishments are part of my needlework experience. I have created satin roses by hand needlework which were attached to the shoulders of a mother of the bride satin and lace suit...breathtaking! I have created many beautiful items with macrame, including stunning plant hangers. I have also created gorgeous wall hangings using over 20 different stitches in needlepoint. I can teach these skills to you, whether you just want to learn the basics, or want to take on the challenge of more complex and intricate work. You have the ability within you!
Physical science is the study of the physical world around you. The physical laws of energy, forces, and matter govern the interactions of particles in our natural world. Physical science or physics is the foundational science because the other natural sciences deal with systems that obey the laws of physics. Many concepts in science can be learned through a hands-on approach and/or experimentation and I use this strategy whenever it is appropriate. Virtual labs are another good learning tool that can help the learner understand physical science concepts.
Did you know that there are strategies that you can use to help you be successful when you take a PRAXIS, TeXes, or other certifying exam? I have been taught the test-taking strategies, and have used these strategies to take multiple certifying exams--passing each one on the first attempt. On my first attempt taking the PRAXIS/TeXes to become a certified teacher I only missed one question! Since I am familiar with how the strategies can be applied to each question, I can teach you how to use the strategies also. I can also give you study tips to help you prepare for the exam.
Teaching or tutoring math at the middle school level requires me to take different approaches with each different student. I find that if I can help students pinpoint where they may have a misconception, then we can clear up any confusion and build understanding from there. Some students really struggle with math, so I approach each problem trying to identify what is the given info in the problem that is needed, and what specific steps are needed to set up the problem to solve it accurately. This step by step system helps middle schoolers put a plan into action. I have taught/tutored middle school math and prealgebra, and am Certified by WyzAnt for math through prealgebra
The key to proficiency as a public speaker is being comfortable with the language and having confidence in your ability to engage and/or persuade the audience through verbal communication. I can mentor any age individual in the correct pronunciation (pronouncing) of words and correct use of grammar in the English language. I can help you build your confidence level in your ability to be an effective verbal communicator. I have over 25 years experience as a public speaker both professionally and through personal presentations in participation with various educational, health-related, or non-profit organizations. I have a strong background in the proper use of grammar for both writing and speaking with more than 20 years of extensive writing experience. I can help you identify areas of difficulty and errors in your use of grammar and help you make and retain the needed corrections to give you the ability to engage in public speaking with confidence!
I would not only have your elementary aged child read to me, but I also would read to your child, and strive to develop a love for reading in her or him. Instilling a love for reading in children goes a long way in creating a strong motivation to become a good reader. Part of this process is for others to read stimulating stories to the child. Along with the child reading to me, I would give her/him assessments that would allow us to evaluate her/his comprehension or understanding of what he/she has read. For students above elementary grade levels, lessons would include critical reading passages with assessments that would enable the student to develop and enhance critical thinking skills and reading comprehension. I would also work with students at all grade levels to teach them specific strategies that can be used to increase reading comprehension and enhance their ability to score higher on reading assessments.
I have been sewing for over 40 years. I can teach you how to sew from the basics of needle selection for the fabric type and how to alter and cut out patterns to sewing beautiful items like a professional. I am experienced in clothing alterations. My experience in sewing includes children/teen, ladies, and men's clothing, plus home decor items such as pillows, shams, bedding, and professional looking window treatments. Buttonholes, zippers, blindstich hemming, zigzag stitching, applique, and decorative stitching, along with decorative trims and fabric covered cording are second nature to me. My sewing experience includes wedding and bridal gowns, other formal wear, ladies and men's blazers or suits, scrub tops, and all kinds of simple to complex clothing patterns and styles. I can also help you alter a pattern if needed.
Being organized and developing good study skills is essential to the student who wants to reach his or her highest potential. I help students get organized so they know what assignments need to be given the highest priority at any given time. I also help students learn how to create checklists to keep themselves on track and to track their progress. Developing good study skills will take discipline on the part of the student but will reap huge rewards in the long run. Maintaining a habit of studying lesson content on a daily basis will reduce test taking stress and workload!
I have tutored and/or taught students of different grade levels ranging from elementary to high school for the TAKS (and now STAARS) tests. Subject content includes math, reading, science, writing, social studies. I review subject content with the students and also emphasize test taking strategies. I can help the struggling chemistry student master all the different kinds of calculations that they might encounter on the science TAKS from gas law calculations to molarity to balancing nuclear decay reactions.
I can show you an easy way to build a large vocabulary. Having an extensive vocabulary will cause you to become a much better writer. Writing that repeats the same words over and over is dull and boring! But when writing incorporates a variety of words in expressing ideas, the writing becomes much more interesting and enjoyable to read. A large vocabulary also helps the reader to increase reading comprehension. Reading comprehension grows as more words are added to one's vocabulary. In addition to needing a vast vocabulary for language arts, different subjects have foundational vocabulary that the student needs to know and understand. Knowing the vocabulary creates a foundation which can be built upon in learning and applying higher level concepts. I can help you learn simple strategies that will make adding new words to your vocabulary fun and easy.
I have been gifted with the ability to write well (God gets the glory--I don't), and I enjoy writing. I have written many papers as a graduate student using APA style formatting while I was pursuing my master's degree in education. The Lord enabled me to earn an "A" on every assignment I submitted. I have tutored others and helped them improve their writing skills whether it be students at the college, secondary school, or elementary school level. I am highly qualified to help anyone become a better writer, including English language learners, due to my strong skills in spelling, sentence structure, grammar, and extensive vocabulary. I not only write professionally, but I also write in my personal life blogging as time permits, and I have authored several books. I am currently working on a book of poetry that I hope to e-publish in the near future. I believe that by being involved in the craft of writing I keep my writing skills sharp.
