About Blanca

I am a PhD candidate graduating in May 2017. Throughout my 11-year academic journey, I have worked in different university offices and settings. These experiences game me unique perspectives and insights regarding academic success. My areas of expertise are geared toward graduate and undergraduate students. I truly enjoy helping students to gain a deeper understanding of the subjects they are studying. I also enjoy passing along tips and tricks I wish I had learned as an undergraduate student. I offer services in the following areas: tutoring in statistics, psychology, and writing as well as academic coaching in applying for graduate school and preparing for the GRE.

**Statistics: I have training in elementary through higher level statistics (factor analysis) through courses in my graduate programs. I provide guidance in understanding statistical theories and concepts by demonstrating how to use complex formulas. I enjoy using Wyzant’s virtual classroom because it provides a way to collaborate with students in solving statistical formulas in real-time from the comfort of their home.

**Psychology: Psychology has become my life as a practicing mental health therapist. I have studied psychology since 2007 and use many concepts and theories in my clinical work. I also enjoy teaching psychology because it is truly exciting and fascinating. I break down complex theories or concepts into everyday language is helpful in my tutoring work. Students can learn about these principles through real-world scenarios and examples.

**Writing (including dissertation and thesis help): Moreover, I provide guidance in improving writing to meet the rigorous standards set by university and graduate school programs. I work closely with students by providing feedback on areas of growth, improving their writing to meet high academic standards. As a social researcher, I help students working on theses or dissertations through explain the process, reviewing their work, discussing research principles, among others. I provide assistance with writing and developing research studies in psychology and other social sciences. I have presented at national conferences and defended a thesis and dissertation, providing me with plenty of experience to guide students in the right direction.

**GRE Preparation: I provide test preparation tutoring for the general GRE including the writing portion. My tutoring involves teaching test-taking and preparation skills to succeed on the exam. I also guide students in improving their academic writing to raise their analytical writing score that increases their competitiveness as an applicant.

**Applying to graduate school: My tutoring and coaching services extend beyond helping students prepare for the GRE. I also provide guidance in the graduate school application process, which can be overwhelming and anxiety provoking. I guide students in choosing graduate schools, writing and preparing essays, and reviewing CVs or resumes to highlight their experience/qualifications. I also answer any questions regarding interview preparation, determining quality programs, and expectations throughout the application process.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have! I look forward to helping you with your academic needs!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

My training as a university counseling psychologist has provided many opportunities to learn about career development through theory and hands-on work. I have also provided students with counseling regarding career development through my work as a university instructor. The techniques, courses, and research I have been exposed to have given me valuable insights into which factors predict career success and satisfaction. I have been trained in reviewing resumes and CVs, providing guidance and feedback regarding interview materials and preparation, as well as engaging clients in mock interviews.

College Counseling

Applying to two graduate programs provided me with the experience in knowing what to do, and to avoid, to create an excellent application. Working as an administrative assistant within the graduate school of my university has given me valuable insight into what academic departments look for in successful candidates. Lastly, as a graduate student (master’s and doctoral) I’ve learned the inner workings of academia and what you can look for to determine your fit within an academic department. I can guide you in the process or finding and/or applying to the graduate programs that best suit your needs.

GRE

I have taken the GRE twice to apply to my master and doctoral programs requiring intensive preparation. This preparation involved developing test-taking skills and improving my writing abilities. I have used these same skills and abilities to get through two graduate programs and become a college instructor. During my time as an instructor, I taught students these test-taking skills and helped them improve their academic writing. Being in graduate school for nearly seven years has taught me all the valuable skills and knowledge needed to be successful in academia. I look forward to sharing this information with students that I tutor and coach to help them improve their acceptance rates and succeed in graduate school.

Proofreading

I have seven years of experience writing at the academic level. Writing and defending my doctoral thesis required additional training in increasing my ability to write clearly and concisely. I also have six years of experience working with APA style, and can help you to navigate the small nuances within your academic paper or research proposal. I can help you to step up your writing game to an academic level to receive feedback on your ideas, instead of your writing.

Psychology

I’ve been studying psychology since 2007. I am now nearing the end of my third psychology degree and I have become nothing but more passionate about this field. As a graduate student, I have had to defend both a master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation regarding two distinct psychological topics. I am currently a psychology practitioner, focusing on my clinical work with psychology students. Throughout my academic career I have taken courses pertaining to a variety of psychological concepts, including but not limited to: theory and practice, career development, abnormal psychology, multicultural counseling, history and considerations, group counseling, diagnosis, research design and methodology, and many more.

Statistics

I've been trained in basic to higher order statistics (factor analysis) throughout my graduate training. I enjoy teaching statistical concepts in a way that enables a deeper understanding and less intimidation. I do this by providing real world examples and translating concepts into basic ideas. I truly like helping students to feel less intimidated by statistics and more confident in the content.

Writing

Throughout my 11 years in academia, I have had to improve my writing skills to meet the high standards of graduate school. Additionally, writing a master's thesis and doctoral dissertation challenged me to further improve my skill-set after receiving feedback from separate tenured instructors. Their feedback required me to not only improve my writing abilities, but to communicate my ideas in a clear and concise manner. This knowledge was useful during my tenure as an instructor where I worked with students to highlight their areas of growth and improve their confidence in writing essays and research papers.
