About Penni

I have been working within the education industry for 17 years. I have experience in a plethora of settings including: the independent school district as a special needs teacher, a Montessori school teacher's aid and a special needs in home tutor with children.

In the collegiate setting, I have attained a master tutor's license and have experience as a tutor of undergraduate and graduate students and as a professor of college students. I have a master's degree in psychology and an undergraduate degree in development of family and childhood education.

I have experience in working with the general population students as well as children and adults with learning disabilities, diagnoses such as ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum students and international (ESL) students.

It's my pleasure to tutor elementary level students in all subject areas and high school/college level students in all areas except math. I also specialize in tutoring in study, test taking skills and test preparation for tests such as: general tests, the STAAR and ACT.

All of my experience has taught me that every person has the right, ability and desire to learn. My job is to create the motivation and to the find the right learning tools for each individual. As an educator, I create a unique learning plan for each of my students that will best fit their learning style, ability level and desired outcomes. My role encompasses that of a cheer leader, teacher, mentor and confidant, providing my students with the support they need to be successful!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I am qualified to tutor in College Counseling because I have a Masters degree in Psychology. I also have five years of experience working at University of Houston - Clear Lake as an academic coach and tutor. As an academic coach, I help students with study, test taking and organizational skills. I also help students plan their college careers as well as counsel them on how to access job opportunities and prepare for interviews with other school and higher level career positions. I also am familiar with resources available that can further help them such as academic counseling with their specific school at UHCL and the career center at the university.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 17 years of experience working with elementary aged children. As part of this experience I was a certified elementary special needs teacher. I have also worked in private Montessori schools as a teacher's aid and in the homes of special needs children as a tutor.

Phonics

In working with elementary school children as a tutor, I have implemented phonics into reading practice with all of my students. I feel phonics are the building blocks of reading and spelling. I have experience using phonics for tutoring and used phonics as an elementary special education inclusion teacher.

Special Needs

I have worked with special needs children and adults alike. I have worked in the ISD as a certified special needs elementary teacher. I have also tutored special needs children with a variety of diagnoses.

In the collegiate realm, I continue to work as a tutor/academic coach for my alma mater, University of Houston Clear Lake.

Study Skills

I have received training for and am now certified as a mater tutor. I am currently working as a tutor/academic coach for the University of Houston Clear Lake. There I work with students to enhance their study habits, test taking abilities and time management skills.
