Bio

Language learning is a true passion of mine, and teaching ESL to adults allows me to do work that I truly love. I have two areas of expertise. First, I work with advanced ESL speakers who want to "fine-tune" their English by learning the nuances of the language. We do in-depth work on idiomatic language, American slang and conversation style, and the use of sarcasm and humor. The goal of most of my advanced students is to master the both the language grammatically and socio-linguistically....

The goal of most of my advanced students is to master the both the language grammatically and socio-linguistically. They want their co-workers and managers to focus exclusively on the outstanding work that they do and not get distracted by language errors and delivery style.

Secondly, I place a high value on conversation practice and correction. I love having meaningful conversations with students that stretch their critical thinking skills and their vocabulary. To this end, I provide classes that focus primarily on increasing conversation skills and confidence. Students walk away knowing exactly what they can practice to take their conversations to the next level.

In addition, I help beginner and intermediate German students learn the basics of the German language and to use the language in conversation. The German language holds a special place in my heart, and I bring that passion for the language into every session I have with a new German student.

Coaching students in a one-on-one environment is where I thrive as a teacher. I have a well-honed knack for understanding what students are trying to say in the target language and helping them to express their ideas in a way that makes them feel validated and confident. One of the most important philosophies I adhere to is that making mistakes is vital to the language learning process. By creating a comfortable and relaxed environment, I help students to shed their language anxiety and enjoy the process of learning a new language.

My education includes a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri - Columbia and a Master of Arts in Germanic Language from the University of Texas at Austin, where I was a teaching assistant. In addition to my time at UT-Austin, I owned and operated my own tutoring business for seven years, as well as taught English as a Second Language at ELS Language Center for two years.

Knowledgeable

She taught me about pronunciation and practice exercises to improve certain vowel sounds such as shoe and long e and o sounds. We discussed strategies for independent questions.

Yes, very knowledgeable.

Punctuation, verbs, adjectives, it really helped with understanding putting together sentences. She was a great teacher and I will recommend her to my friends. The session was helpful to my daily routine at work. I can't wait for the next session. Next week will be much more informational.

Knowledge and Patient Tutor - Editing

Stephanie was great throughout the entire process, Stephanie helped in editing a book I have been working on. She did a great job communicating, adding thoughtful insight and being patient with me. I would definitely recommend her and hope to continue to use her knowledge in my other projects. I recently completed a couple of courses and I wish I knew Stephanie before then. Nevertheless, she is amazing!!!!!
