About Stephanie

Language learning is a true passion of mine, and teaching ESL to adults allows me to do work that I truly love. I have two areas of expertise. First, I work with advanced ESL speakers who want to "fine-tune" their English by learning the nuances of the language. We do in-depth work on idiomatic language, American slang and conversation style, and the use of sarcasm and humor. The goal of most of my advanced students is to master the both the language grammatically and socio-linguistically. They want their co-workers and managers to focus exclusively on the outstanding work that they do and not get distracted by language errors and delivery style.

Secondly, I place a high value on conversation practice and correction. I love having meaningful conversations with students that stretch their critical thinking skills and their vocabulary. To this end, I provide classes that focus primarily on increasing conversation skills and confidence. Students walk away knowing exactly what they can practice to take their conversations to the next level.

In addition, I help beginner and intermediate German students learn the basics of the German language and to use the language in conversation. The German language holds a special place in my heart, and I bring that passion for the language into every session I have with a new German student.

Coaching students in a one-on-one environment is where I thrive as a teacher. I have a well-honed knack for understanding what students are trying to say in the target language and helping them to express their ideas in a way that makes them feel validated and confident. One of the most important philosophies I adhere to is that making mistakes is vital to the language learning process. By creating a comfortable and relaxed environment, I help students to shed their language anxiety and enjoy the process of learning a new language.

My education includes a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri - Columbia and a Master of Arts in Germanic Language from the University of Texas at Austin, where I was a teaching assistant. In addition to my time at UT-Austin, I owned and operated my own tutoring business for seven years, as well as taught English as a Second Language at ELS Language Center for two years.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri and have taught for many years as a private English tutor for K-12. English grammar and writing are my expertise, and I have a knack for helping students develop their ideas into effective writing.

ESL/ESOL

I currently own a coaching company that specializes in ESL instruction for adults working in the United States who want to improve their English skills. Prior to that, I was an ESL Instructor at ELS Language Centers for over two years. At ELS, I taught speaking and grammar, reading and writing, research paper development, as well as vocabulary building. I consistently received positive student reviews that placed my student feedback average above company standards. Prior to ELS, I tutored private clients in grammar, reading, and essay development. I have also completed a 120-Hour TEFL Certification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language).

German

I have a Bachelor of Arts in German from the University of Missouri - Columbia, as well as a Master of Arts in Germanic Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. At UT-Austin, I was a teaching assistant for beginning and intermediate German. I lived and studied in Germany for a semester as an undergraduate student and lived in worked in Germany again as an intern while in graduate school. Teaching German is a joy for me, as I enjoy watching students move from learning the basics to using the language to truly express themselves.

I have also helped edit several published books in the self-help and spirituality genre. In addition, I have expertise in the editing and proofreading of papers from students who are learning English as a second language. I have a knack for understanding the idea a client is trying to express and making it clear for the reader.

Writing

I have a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri and extensive experience writing articles for various publications. My subject expertise includes but is not limited to natural health, spirituality, and language. For almost two years I have taught English as a Second Language at a local language school, and a great deal of my teaching includes editing the work of students who are learning English as a second language. I have a knack for helping students to express themselves more clearly in writing.
