About Rachel

I am a biochemistry major with a love for all subjects! I am currently enrolled in upper level chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, and math courses. My end goal is to be an optometrist, so I also have some knowledge in medical terminology and am enrolled in a vertebrae physiology course. On top of that, I love to read and write, and have been highly successful in all endeavors regarding those subjects, including grade school, the SAT, and college-level courses. I am a well-rounded student with a love for learning and a passion for helping people.

On top of my experience as a student, I am currently the Webcam Coordinator at the Texas State Writing Center. I utilize my skills in writing to tutor students in writing both face-to-face and through webcam. I tutor students from a variety of backgrounds, from freshmen struggling to write English essays to PhD candidates working on their dissertations. I also tutor for the Pre-Med program at the university in subjects like biology, chemistry, and math.

Beyond the university, I have experience tutoring students in the K-12 levels, helping the develop their learning skills and helping expand their knowledge in the subjects they are studying. I enjoy tutoring students because I am able to share my knowledge with a student with whom I share the same goal of pursuing a higher level of education with, whether they are just starting out in grade school or they are finishing up a Thesis. Tutoring not only helps the students I work with, it allows me to learn more from the students themselves, and I get to expand my knowledge as well.

Math is best approached from many different angles in order to find the best method for solving a problem. Giving students the appropriate tools they need to solve any math problem is the goal of any math tutor so that students can then use those tools to excel in math. I have learned many different methods of learning math on many levels and am able to utilize these to do math.

When studying biology, it is important to understand that everything is connected, and finding those connections is key to effectively learning biology. Tutoring in biology is something I am qualified to do, seeing as I have completed International Baccalaureate Biology as well as applied biology courses at the college level.

I am willing to take the time to help a student understand material they are struggling with by finding a learning method that works for them. I am also ready to assist students who understand the material and want to delve deeper into the material for a more complete knowledge of the subject. I am excited to learn through students, and look forward to working with them.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I excelled a lot in genetics in IB biology during both my junior and senior years of high school. I completed the course during the Spring 2016 semester with a B in the lecture and an A in the lab. Genetics is a big web of coding that can be as specific as an mRNA codon to as general as evolution, and that is oftentimes difficult for students to understand. I think I can show students how genetics is very complex, but if they can understand that the basis is DNA and the driving force is natural selection, they can develop a deeper understanding of the subject.

Organic Chemistry

I have successfully completed both Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 at the college level. I am currently studying it because I need to be well-versed in this subject for the OAT, which I will be taking in the spring. This subject made a lot of sense to me once I thought of the molecules as centers with electrons being moved around rather than trying to remember a whole lot of rules. I think I can communicate that with students who are struggling with this difficult subject.
