About Tim

I have been teaching for 25 years. I have two bachelor's degrees, a master's degree and 2 teaching certificates. I am currently a member of the music education faculty at Our Lady of the Lake University. I raised a child with expressive language disorder and spent many hours helping her with reading, writing, spelling and grammar. In May of 2010, my daughter graduated from Texas Lutheran University with 3 degrees. I am knowledgeable in multiple subject areas. I am enthusiastic about teaching and committed to a lifetime of learning. I communicate this enthusiasm to everyone with whom I come into contact. I have ADHD and possess an intimate understanding of the difficulties associated with this condition. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a substitute teacher I have taught English and Language Arts at all levels from kindergarten through high school. My daughter was diagnosed with expressive language disorder. I tutored her extensively in English. She graduated from Texas Lutheran University with degrees in Accounting, Finance and Business Administration in 2010. I received six hours of college credit in English from Trinity University based upon my entrance exam scores. I have tutored adult students in English and test preparation.

My daughter was diagnosed with expressive language disorder. I tutored her extensively in reading, writing and spelling through elementary, middle school, high school and college. ADHD

I have had ADHD all of my life. This gives me a unique perspective when it comes to helping students with this condition.

American History

As a substitute teacher I have taught American, European and World History for several years. My students are always impressed by the depth and breadth of my knowledge of the subject.

Biology

As a substitute teacher I have taught physical sciences and life sciences at all levels from kindergarten through high school. My students are always impressed by the depth and breadth of my knowledge and the way I explain scientific concepts in a way that is easy for them to understand.

Cooking

I have been cooking for more than 40 years. I specialize in Indian, Greek and Cajun Cuisine.

Dyslexia

I have tutored a number of dyslexia students. My daughter has expressive language disorder which is related to dyslexia. I tutored her throughout elementary school, middle school, high school and college.

Ear Training

I have taught music for 22 years. I have 3 levels of Kodaly Certification. My Kodaly training included extensive work in ear training and solfege. I have worked as a choir director and I currently teach private lessons in voice, piano and guitar. Ear training is component of my instruction and is essential to musicianship.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach elementary self-contained (1-8) in the state of Texas. I passed the certification exam with flying colors.

Elementary Math

I have tutored elementary students in math for a number of years.

Elementary Science

As a substitute teacher I have several years of experience teaching elementary science classes. My students and cooperating teachers are always impressed by the depth and breadth of my knowledge.

English

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored students in English, spelling, grammar and vocabulary. I have a strong command of the English language, an extensive vocabulary and a superior knowledge of grammar.

European History

I have taken several university-level European History courses and have read extensively on the subject. As a substitute teacher I have taught American, European and World History for several years. My students are always impressed by the depth and breadth of my knowledge of the subject.

GED

I have been teaching for more than 23 years. I have experience tutoring students in a variety of subjects including math, science, reading, writing, spelling and social studies. I have two Bachelors degrees from UTSA and a Masters degree from Texas State.

General Music

I have taught elementary general music for 17 years. I have taught music appreciation at the college level for 2 years. I have a bachelor's degree in music literature. I plan to pursue a doctorate in musicology.

The Master's Thesis for the MM in Kodaly Pedagogy at Texas State University consists of an anthology of more than 300 folk songs collected from primary sources. These folk songs are analyzed for musical content and pedagogical use. They are then indexed alphabetically, melodically and rhythmically. Lamar Robertson, the professor who reviewed my folk song collection called it the most complete and accurate he had ever seen. After I had finished my Level 3 Certification requirements, the Kodaly Certification Program at Texas State University hired me to do folk song research for them.

Government & Politics

As a substitute teacher, I have taught government, economics and political science for several years. My students are always impressed by the depth and breadth of my knowledge of the subject.

Grammar

Music Theory

I have bachelor's degrees in Music Literature and Music Education from UTSA and a Master's Degree in Kodaly Pedagogy from Texas State University. The choir at First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Antonio has performed several of my compositions.

Philosophy

I have been a student of philosophy for many years. Arguing philosophy is one of my favorite hobbies.

Phonics

I was taught to read using phonics and I have tutored several pupils in phonics.

Physical Science

Physics has been a hobby of mine for a number of years and I have read several books on the subject. Piano

I teach private piano lessons to young beginners in my home and in students' homes. I have recieved positive feedback from a number of students and their parents. I use the Faber Piano Adventures series for my younger pupils and the Alfred's Basic Piano series for older beginners.

Prealgebra

As a substitute teacher, I have taught math for several years.

PSAT

I scored in the 96th percentile on the SAT. I have experience tutoring in all of the subjects that are included in the SAT and PSAT.

Psychology

I took psychology courses in college and have read a great deal on the subject. As a substitute teacher, I have taught all sorts of science classes for several years. My students are always impressed by the depth and breadth of my knowledge of the subject.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking at Losoya Intermediate school. I won awards for public speaking in high school.

Reading

As a substitute teacher I have taught English and Language Arts at all levels from kindergarten through high school. My daughter was diagnosed with expressive language disorder. I have studied comparative religions for more than 35 years. I have read the scriptures of most of the world's major religions and am familiar with the writings of numerous theologians and philosophers.

SAT Reading

As a substitute teacher, I have taught English and Language Arts at all levels from kindergarten through high school. When I was an undergraduate at Trinity University, I was exempt from taking the required English courses due to my high SAT scores in reading and writing.

SAT Writing

I passed the writing section of the SAT with flying colors. I have experience tutoring students in writing. I helped my daughter with her writing throughout high school and college.

Sight Singing

I hold 3 levels of Kodaly certification. This included intense training in solfege and sight-singing. I have taught sight-singing for 21 years.

Social Studies

As a substitute teacher I have taught Texas, United States and World History, Government and Geography. My students are always impressed at the depth and breadth of my knowledge. I have tutored students in US, Texas and World History.

Special Needs

During my 25 years of teaching I have served students with a variety of disabilities including ADD, blindness, autism, orthopedic disabilities, behavioral problems and mental challenges. I myself have ADHD and my daughter has expressive language disorder.

Spelling

My daughter has expressive language disorder and is a very poor speller. I helped her study for spelling tests throughout elementary school and proofread all of her papers in middle school, high school and college. I have tutored elementary students in spelling and have administered many spelling tests as a substitute teacher.

STAAR

I have tutored several students at different grade levels and helped them pass the reading and writing portions of the STARR test. I have used STAAR study materials and releases of previously administered STAAR tests to aid students in their preparation. My tutoring has helped these students improve their STAAR scores. I have also taught STAAR remediation courses at the high school and junior high levels.

Study Skills

As a college student with ADD, I had to devise strategies to help me stay focused. As the father of a child with a learning disability, I had to learn ways to help her with her studies. As a tutor of low-performing students, I have learned how to make suggestions to help students improve their study habits. As a private music teacher, I have made suggestions to students to help them practice more efficiently.

TAKS

I have taught TAKS prep classes and have administered the TAKS test on several occasions.

I have been a singer for most of my life. I studied voice under Herals Stark at UTSA. In the early 1980s I organized and led a professional madrigal group known as the Silver Swan Singers. From 1990-1995, I was a member of the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers. In 1992 I performed the Faure Requiem with the Mastersingers at Carnegie Hall. I have directed choirs at the elementary, intermediate and high school levels. I currently teach private voice lessons in my home as well as in students' homes.

World History
