University of Alabama (Trombone Performance)
Texas State University (Master's)
My name is Michael and I'm currently a master's student at Texas State University getting my degree in trombone performance. I received my Bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in trombone performance as well. I currently serve as the Graduate Instructional Assistant for the Texas State Trombone Studio under Dr. Martin McCain Jr. I currently have a 4.0 as my GPA also. My primary instrument is bass trombone but I'm capable of teaching baritone and tuba as well. I've received private lessons and attended masterclasses by some of the top trombonists in the profession such as: Joe Alessi (New York Philharmonic), David Finlayson (New York Philharmonic), James Markey (Boston Symphony Orchestra), Gerry Pagano (St. Louis Symphony), Pete Ellefson (Indiana University), Denson Paul Pollard (Metropolitan Opera), Craig Mulcahy (National Symphony Orchestra), and many more.
I have experience teaching students of all ages from 6th grade all the way to undergraduate college students. Teaching is something I enjoy very much and for a variety of reasons. I love sharing my knowledge with aspiring students, and seeing them light up upon discovering something new and fascinating, or finally grasping a tough concept. I love witnessing the growth of students as they progress and come to enjoy the many things music has to offer. Teaching not only helps the student but the teacher as well. I learn just as much from my students as (I hope) they do from me. It's a wonderfully rewarding process and it's something I want to do for as long as I can.
Aside from being a busy performer I'm also a mildly successful composer. Composition has become an important part of my musical journey and I've done surprisingly well with it so far. Composition has helped to bolster my knowledge of theory and ear training as well. I'm also a very versatile performer, having played in a variety of concert ensembles and professional jazz bands.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During all four years of my undergrad I was involved in courses that included ear training. I'm aware of the teaching methods and materials used in most standard ear training courses. As a composer and studying jazz musician my ear training and abilities have gotten even better. Ear training is something you have to work on constantly as a musician and I'm always trying to improve.
During all four years of my undergrad I was taking some kind of ear-training course. I'm aware of the different teaching methods and materials used for sight-singing, and I'm currently taking voice lessons with another grad student here at Texas State.
I am a mildly accomplished composer and arranger. Many of my compositions have been premiered by the University of Alabama Trombone Choir, the Texas State Trombone Choir, and Gerry Pagano of the St. Louis Symphony. More projects are on the way, including the premiere and recording of a new solo by Dr. Jon Whitaker, professor of Trombone at the University of Alabama.
I've been playing trombone now for 13 years. I received my Bachelor's degree in Trombone Performance from the University of Alabama, and I'm currently working on my Master's degree at Texas State University. I also currently serve as the Graduate Instructional Assistant under Dr. Martin Mccain. I'm also the first person in the history of the school of music at Texas State to ever hold such a position.
