Old Dominion University (English)
Texas State University (Graduate Coursework)
I am excited to avail my services to you. I have three years of tutoring experience and eight years of additional relevant experience. I am comfortable tutoring students of any age, and at Austin Community College’s Learning Lab, I regularly work with a diverse clientele that includes veterans, ESL students, and those with learning and physical disabilities. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in English at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and was a member of Sigma Tau Delta at ODU and at Texas State University, where I pursued graduate studies in English (focusing on literature). I have supervised the scoring of standardized reading and writing tests, edited and proofread various educational publications, and worked at the Texas State Writing Center.
It was during my year at the Writing Center that I discovered my passion for helping students and became a CRLA-certified tutor. I loved seeing students' faces light up when they suddenly understood a concept or technique. Last year, I tutored seventh graders in reading and writing at the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy in Austin for four months (a temporary position), and I have been employed as an English, writing, and philosophy tutor at the ACC-Hays Learning Lab in Kyle since January 2014. It is very rewarding to know that I am making a positive impact on students’ lives. Ever since I was a child, I have excelled at writing and reading, and my professional editing experiences sharpened my grammatical skills to a fine point. I am a literary enthusiast and creative writer who believes in the power of the English language in all its forms to open up new worlds to people. As an empathetic person, it deeply concerns me when I see human beings' complex communication methods breaking down in our society. After all, It is primarily through language that we come to know and understand one another. I want to give people the chance to create meaningful connections with one another in their professional and personal lives. I already do that in my tutoring at Austin Community College, and now I would like to do that for you.
I look forward to meeting you and empowering you academically. Feel free to contact me and inquire about my services and availability.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
