About Bruce

I have over forty years of experience playing and teaching percussion, and bring a tremendous amount of professional experience to my teaching. I have performed a myriad of styles in a variety of settings including The Zilker Park Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. I have played with many artists and ensembles including Mitch Watkins, Freefall, Pat Travers, Ray Benson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dr. James Polk, Jay Hogenbarton, Floyd Domino, Jumpstart, Gary P. Nunn to name but a few. I hold a Bachelor of Music Performance degree in Percussion from Texas State University and have studied with a variety of professional percussionists including Rod Morgenstein, Jim Hall, Alan Shinn, and Genaro Gonzalez. I am currently the percussion specialist at San Marcos Academy and an active member of the Percussive Arts Society. I play in a variety of musical situations including a Big Band Jazz Ensemble, an eleven piece high energy dance band, and a Jazz trio. I have always maintained a private teaching practice in addition to my other work. I have taught students of all ages at all levels, and love sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. My teaching goals run parallel to my performance goals: to be musically versatile and technically proficient, while having an enormous amount of fun in the process.

I always try to find out a student's aspirations, and then go from there. I believe in student centered learning. After I have determined their goals I then assess their ability and experience level so I can plan the best course of study. I always do my very best when it comes to my teaching and playing. I expect no less from my students. I assign work that is essential if a student wants to progress and move on to the next level. However, I also try not to overwhelm my students with too much work that is beyond their current abilities or schedule to complete. I believe in a gradual step by step approach that achieves a positive result, and is also an enjoyable experience.

I have my own professional studio where I teach and record. I teach both private and group classes. However, I am also willing to travel to another location if that is convenient for the student. At my studio I have plenty of instruments on hand including a Drum Workshop drum set, an electronic Roland V drum kit, a marimba, a vibraphone, and various keyboards including two grand pianos. I run an Akai DPS 24 Digital Audio Workstation in my drum studio that I can use to record drums, as well as other software recording programs such as Logic Pro, and Sonar. I believe in preparing students for the current real world of music and recording.

I look forward to hearing from you, and helping you achieve success in your musical journey.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
