With over six years of teaching and tutoring experience in English, I am proficient at helping students in every stage of the writing or reading process. I first worked as a college-level teaching assistant for a science-centered English course; not only did I gain tutoring experience from this position, but I also became advanced at writing for the sciences. I can thus assist students in multiple formatting and citation styles from APA to MLA. At the same time, I served as a Writing Center Consultant, aiding college students in the writing process from brainstorming to composition to editing. I obtained a double-major in English and Communication as well, graduating summa cum laude.
For two years, I worked as an eighth-grade language arts and Reading teacher, instructing Honors classes as well as tutoring at the sixth and seventh grade levels. I then moved to the college level, serving as a Writing Center Coordinator for a community college. Through these experiences, I gained the skill of quickly assessing students' learning needs and adapting/creating a lesson for the most effective learning. I also worked with multiple ESL/ESOL students in English language practice. As a Reading teacher, I can effectively help students break down complex texts (narrative and informational) and make inferences from them, and I love introducing vocabulary strategies. Above all, I look forward to working with you towards your reading or writing growth! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Because I possess a B.A. in communication as well as English, I am proficient at composing and delivering speeches in multiple genres. I have tutored students at the college level in public speaking, including helping students draft outlines, provide specific supporting details, deliver the speech effectively, and keep the speech at the required time limit. Furthermore, I served as a speech and debate coach for the National Christian Homeschool Forensics and Debate Association, coaching students in cutting and delivering interpretations of literature. One pair of students I coached even made it to the national tournament level.
