In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a teaching license at the secondary level but took many of the same classes as the elementary education students. I tutored a variety of subjects at the elementary level for about two years.
I have a B.S. in English, secondary education with a teaching license, and M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, as well as over four years of English tutoring experience and one year teaching at the college level.
I incorporate study skills into my developmental college composition courses. I focus on reading for retention and note-taking abilities. I use the TKED method for marking reading selections and various note-taking styles such as Cornell and Outlining. I also discuss how to study for a test.
I have a B.S. in English, secondary education, and M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition. My M.A. program was geared largely towards teaching students HOW to teach writing at the college level, including composition theory and pedagogical theory. I tutored at the Writing Center at Texas State University for a year and worked for an online tutoring service, tutoring essay writing for a year. I now teach college composition.
