Hi! My name is Matthew and I’m currently a music tutor and music industry major at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. After receiving the “Outstanding Music Theory IV Student Award”, I was recommended by the head of the music department to become a tutor within UIW’s work-study program, where I have consistently enjoyed the opportunity to help students gain a better understanding and appreciation of music.

I am very flexible within my tutoring sessions, although they usually consist of reviewing class materials, creating exercises with students based on music concepts, and then giving the student time to figure out and complete the exercises (with my help if necessary). This can and will most likely change based on the student. I also enjoy making music theory and aural skills information packets outside of my sessions in order for students to have something to study and look over before classes, exams, or in their free time if they’d like.

I grew up in a musical family, which helped instill an appreciation for music at a young age. My principle instrument is piano, which I started learning at age four. I practiced like crazy growing up and by the time I was in middle school, I was able to play pieces at a college level. Becoming comfortable with the basics of music theory and aural skills will help you become a better music student, hobbyist, musician, and maybe most importantly, a better listener in the musical world. It’s one thing to know that something sounds good, but to know why something sounds good is a different question. Whether you are an advanced or beginner music student, hobbyist, songwriter, or if you are considering studying music in college, I’d be more than happy to help! Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, or to schedule an appointment.

Ear Training

The ability to listen to a given musical passage and transcribe the correct melodies and rhythm is a hard, but important, aspect of studying music. I currently help college students with melodic and rhythmic dictation, rhythmic counting, interval identification and construction, solfege, and sight singing. These all fall under the Aural skills (or Ear Training) category, and are necessary for becoming a better musician.
Music Theory

Music Theory

In 2020, I was awarded the "Outstanding Music Theory IV Student Award". Following this, I was recommended to UIW's work-study program by the head of the music department to become a music theory and aural skills tutor. I have been doing so for almost a year and have helped students with basic and advanced scale, chord, interval, and key signature construction and identification; correct voice leading practices and rules; song forms, analysis, and structures; and many other aspects of music theory.
