About Michaela

I am a life long learner! I love learning about new things every day and sharing what I learn! Since I was 12 years old, I wanted to be a teacher. I taught Sunday school (infants - kindergarten) for 6 years before attending college. I studied early childhood and elementary education while in college as well as special education and bilingual education. I tutored children in reading and other subject areas throughout both my undergraduate and graduate school education. I have experience teaching children from infants through high school, including incarcerated youth.

For the past 17 years, I have been a university professor teaching college students who want to be early childhood/ elementary teachers. I love sharing innovative ways to reach and teach children. By considering children's learning styles, I can adjust content and strategies that are appropriate for each individual child. One of my key approaches is to decrease the anxiety children feel about learning and tests. I teach children a technique that they can use for the rest of their lives to reduce fear, anxiety, and performance discomfort.

What I love about teaching and tutoring is seeing when the light bulb goes off and everything clicks! I don't stop trying various approaches until that happens and a sense of mastery has been achieved. I am very patient, child-centered, and enjoy making learning fun and accessible for children. I do that through hands-on learning and active involvement in the content area.

In the younger grades, children learn the mechanics of reading, "learning to read." At about the second to third grade, there is a switch to "reading to learn." The mechanics need to be mastered in order to have fluency in reading which is key to "reading to learn." Vocabulary is key to understanding what one reads.
I have taught the fundamentals of early reading to young children and have helped struggling readers throughout the elementary and middle school years.

I have certification in early childhood and elementary education and have taught gifted children as well as special needs children and English language learners. A highlight of my teaching career was when I was a "TV" teacher for three summers who taught elementary children throughout the country science lessons that were integrated with language arts, math, and the arts.

I am a dedicated educator who is committed to children's success. By working one-on-one, children receive the attention that is needed to master the material and feel good about their accomplishments at the same time.

Contact me for a one-on-one session and we'll have fun learning along the way!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I earned teaching certifications for early childhood through elementary grades (pre-k - 8th) in two states: Massachusetts and Texas. I am also certified in Massachusetts to teach special education and bilingual/ESL education. In Texas I have taught special education, gifted and talented, migrant education via television and satellite, and ESL to incarcerated youth in West Texas State School. For over 27 years, I have taught teachers and preservice teachers education courses and staff development sessions. I have tutored students in reading, writing, and study skills.

Proofreading

I have a Ph.D. in education and won the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year award from Merrill Prentice Hall and the NAECTE in 2006. As an adjunct faculty member with Walden University, I had over 3 years experience in mentoring doctoral students in the dissertation process.

Study Skills

I earned teaching certifications for early childhood through elementary grades (pre-k - 8th) in two states: Massachusetts and Texas. I am also certified in Massachusetts to teach special education and bilingual/ESL education. In Texas I have taught special education, gifted and talented, migrant education via television and satellite, and ESL to incarcerated youth in West Texas State School. For over 27 years, I have taught teachers and preservice teachers education courses and staff development sessions. I have tutored students in reading, writing, and study skills.

I teach students to release anxiety about studying and tests through the use of a technique called "tapping." This technique is a life-long tool for everyday living.
