About Benjamin

While attending St. Mary's University, I tutored in the Writing Center for 3 years. My tutoring responsibilities included one-on-one appointments in the Writing Center, weekly sessions with assigned ESL students, and weekly sessions with an Interdisciplinary Studies class (IS1300).

Writing Center appointments consisted of hour long sessions designed to improve the student's skills as an organizer and writer of academic papers. We were not simply proofreaders or editors. Students could bring to the writing center any assignment from any class in any subject (however, they were limited to one assignment per appointment).

ESL sessions were hour long sessions with a student assigned to me specifically for the duration of the semester. Sessions covered a wide range of material and assignments with the ultimate goal being the improvement of the student's proficiency with the English language, academic or otherwise.

IS1300 sessions were made up of groups of 5 or 6 students from the same IS1300 class, with each group meeting on a separate day of the week. My job was to work alongside the IS1300 professor to help students develop critical thinking and analytic skills that would be required of them throughout their college careers. To prevent students from relying too heavily on my own analysis of their assigned readings or individual papers, and to prevent all the students from writing duplicate essays, I made my own lessons or brought my own readings that were similar to those assigned by the professor. While I would not assign homework, because I did not feel it necessary to add to their already saturated schedules, the students were required to attend the weekly sessions, I expected them to bring with them the necessary materials, and to actively participate in the assignments and the discussions.

Tutoring, in more ways than one, is collaborative in that students and tutors share and move through the material together. Of course the tutor guides and assists the student in the comprehension of the material, but unlike a teacher/student relationship, in which information can sometimes simply be disseminated to the student, a tutor can provide a more one-on-one setting that facilitates a fuller understanding on the material or a more fully developed essay.

I genuinely enjoy the process of helping a student to more accurately transfer his or her ideas, opinions, and analyses from their mind to the page. Often times, students are reluctant or do not take the time to fully understand what it is they are trying to say within their essays. Helping students to think more comprehensively about their essays is not only enjoyable for me, but it often results in more thought-out and better organized papers. Grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and sentence structure are, of course, important, but I tend to address those issues secondarily, choosing to focus, at least initially, on the actual substance of an essay. I find that this approach, more often than not, motivates students to engage more with the subject material.

While both of my degrees are in English Literature, my first love has always been history and political science. I began my collegiate career as a political science major, so I took a lot of history political science classes during my undergrad career. In the Writing Center tutors worked with students of all majors; however, I often had repeat visitors from a number of history classes. I feel confident working within any subject when it comes to writing academic papers, but I would say English and History/Social Studies would be my strongest subject areas.

Whether looking for long-term assistance with a specific subject or class, or simply looking for help with a difficult assignment, I would be glad to help you better understand the subject and/or produce better, more organized, and effective essays.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I began my collegiate career as a political science major and continue to take an interest in the political climate of our country and the world at large. Not only does a basic understanding of the systems of government make for more diverse and informed citizens, but I also feel comfortable helping students to better understand political activity and behaviors on both an ideological and a practical level.
