I'm an Educational Curriculum specialist whose love of science and a family of Medical professional led to my studies in Biological Sciences with a minor in Child Psychology. I have always worked with kids, even during my undergraduate years and transitioned into a Full time Substitute teacher in a private school for K-8.
As a military spouse, tutoring has allowed me to stay involved in Education while providing flexibility for my family. I have tutored Elementary to High school students, in subjects ranging from reading to science. As a mom of two girls whom I home schooled, working with different learning techniques is important and can make the difference in a child's ability to grasp the subject. I do not believe in a "one size fits all" and want to encourage an understanding of the subject matter & instill confidence in the student.
One of my worst memories in math is being in a classroom and being mocked by my 4th grade math teacher because I answered incorrectly. To this day I still remember that feeling which led to my dread of math. In college that turned around with a great Calculus teacher, Dr. Kapoor, whose love for math turned my dislike into confidence and a B+. My confidence soared and it showed in my Physic courses with a B and A. Today when my 15 year old comes to me with a math problem in Algebra, it is easy and there is no dread factor. Each child grasps math differently and the stronger their foundation of math in Elementary school, the better they perform as they advance in school and eventually college.
Science is my first love and encompasses many subjects to include Biology, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Genetics and my favorite Anatomy & Physiology. I have tutored High Schoolers prepping for their SAT & ACT and worked with Elementary students on Science projects and simple concepts. I love the world of science and have passed that love on to my girls.
Reading is fundamental and as someone who enjoys reading, I understand the patience required to teach a child how to read. I taught both of my girls to read by age 5 and spent many years volunteering as a reading tutor for elementary age students. I have also worked with foreign exchange students and adults teaching English, along with scoring exams for proficiency in English for foreign Nationals.
I worked in the classroom teaching science to Elementary and Middle School students. I love Science and its connection to everything in our world.
Education starts with a great foundation and encouraging the love of learning and developing confidence in your child's ability to learn is one of the greatest gifts we can provide our children. I'm always up for the challenge of not only teaching but learning along with my students, it should be a partnership of growth. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
