About Norma

I am a speech pathologist in the public school system. I am also a certified PK - 8th grade teacher. I have a 27 year old dyslexic son and I pulled him out of school and homeschooled him for 7 years. I used an Orton-Gillingham based program to teach him to read. Programs based on these principles are evidenced based and work very well with dyslexics. I have worked with many dyslexic students and adults over the years and have used my own program that I developed with the different concepts drawn by my artist son. I find most dyslexics need lots of visual and a multi-sensory approach, which mine is. I identify dyslexic students all the time in school and work closely with their teachers. It can be quite frustrating for parents as well as the student because you don't know what to do. Reading in school is too fast paced for the dyslexic struggling reader and many teachers and parents do not know what to do with a struggling reader. In school they will not be tested for dyslexia many times until they are 8 and by then they are so behind. Teaching how to decode is my passion.

Since I have a son that was in Special Education for a learning disability and dyslexia, I know firsthand the struggles that a child and parents go through. The struggling readers can easily become casualties of our school system if they do not learn how to decode. With the demands on teachers today, it is difficult for them to given the struggling reader the time needed to teach them properly and many teachers do not know what to do when in the trenches with these students. I am passionate about helping struggling readers and have been very successful at it.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I have a B.S. in Speech and Language Pathology with a minor in English (1974). The speech pathologists were considered reading specialists back then in addition to working with articulation, language, voice, and fluency disorders. My son is dyslexic so I researched the best programs available to insure his success. I have spent 20 years working with my son and many other struggling readers (young and old). I have done trainings with professional groups on the Orton-Gillingham principles and I have written my own book with illustrations (by my artist son) of many phonetic concepts. I am a speech pathologist in 2 elementary schools and am consulted regularly concerning struggling readers.
