About Travis

Degree: Economics Major with Mathematics Concentration
Actuarial Exams: Probability (9/2015), Financial Mathematics (12/2015)

I’m generally available from 5pm to 9pm.
I can travel to students or meet them online.
My in-person rate is $40/hour, and my online rate is $30/hour.

I’ve tutored music theory and economic development. I’ve taught an aikido class with over thirty students, and I worked for a year assisting students with their writing in Oberlin College’s writing center. I’ve spent years explaining jargon-heavy subjects in plain language, and I understand the importance of ensuring that students can do the same. I am ready to immediately begin tutoring for math, econ, and finance-heavy classes, because I emphasized them in my degree and because I reviewed them for the past nine months while studying for actuarial exams.

To me, tutoring begins with understanding students’ goals and their preferred methods of learning so they can excel by whatever metric they expect to test. I have experience in teaching styles ranging from instructional lessons for students chiefly concerned with mastering specific material, to guided learning for students who wish to compare study methods.

Looking forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I’ve taken calculus courses I-III as a part of my mathematics concentration. I’ve applied different levels of calculus to eight additional classes and two actuarial exams.

I majored in economics, and I’ve taken courses in intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, and advanced econometrics. I’ve also taken courses or conducted independent studies in labor economics, economic development, financial principles, instruments, and the financial system and its history. I’ve tutored for economic development, did collaborative work in economics and econometrics, and participated in a seminar on financial crises.

I studied principles of finance for over 250 hours to pass the actuarial Financial Mathematics exam. I’ve taken courses in financial derivatives, the American financial system, its history, and global financial crises, and I’ve researched causes for the appreciation of the dollar throughout the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath.

I’ve taken a course in probability and studied for roughly 300 hours to complete the actuarial probability exam. I’ve applied probability while taking a financial derivatives course, and I’m currently applying it for the Models for Financial Economics Exam.

I’ve taken courses in statistics, econometrics, and advanced econometrics, as well as probability theory. In my course on advanced economics we regularly critiqued the statistical soundness of published research papers.
