About Iris

I'm a published writer, currently reporting on technology and art and culture for a local independent news service in San Antonio, the Rivard Report. I also write on food and local culture for the magazine Edible San Antonio. If you need help with your writing, I can decipher the mystery of writing and teach you how to be a better writer-- painlessly!

I'm also an experienced research analyst who has worked on and written about government and defense issues for over 22 years. If you'd like help with your government or political science studies, I can use my real world experiences to help you make sense of these complex topics. If you need help with your presentation (developing it and giving it), I can show you ways to make your ideas compelling to present, using my decades of training and experience.

Finally, I'm a certified facilitator who guides large groups in making complex decisions. I develop customized training for businesses and organizations, helping people understand challenging subjects in easy to grasp ways. I also am a docent for the San Antonio Museum of Art, where I lead tours for people of all ages, teaching them about art and culture in ways that makes them want to visit again.

I am an energetic tutor who is passionate about learning and teaching others how to excel-- let me work with you to find your strengths and sharpen your skills you can use in your education and career.

My BA and MA degrees are in political science. I have been a research analyst for over 22 years, writing on a variety of government and defense topics. As a docent at the San Antonio Museum of Art, I also incorporate world history and geography into art presentations. My LinkedIn profile includes a post I wrote about presenting memorable training, using material I developed on the culture and history Oceania as an example.

I have a flexible schedule as a freelance writer and consultant and can work with your schedule to provide you the customized tutoring you need to excel. I can travel to a convenient location to you and help you not just with your assignment, but leave you with life skills you can use throughout your academic and professional career. For lasting impact, please contact me for tutoring that will make a difference!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Government & Politics

My BA is in Political Science and Russian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. My MA is in Political Science and Defense Studies from the George Washington University. In addition, I did post graduate work at the U.S. Naval War College on government and defense studies.

I also worked for the U.S. government for over 22 years, at a defense research center, the Center for Naval Analyses.

I can help demystify the topic for you, breaking the subject down into easy to understand chunks of information. Second, I use real world examples to highlight the points in the subject. This makes it easier to remember why the information is important.

I'd be happy to help make sense of government and politics for you as your tutor.

Political Science

My BA is in Political Science and Russian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. My MA is in Political Science and Defense Studies from the George Washington University. In addition, I did post graduate work at the U.S. Naval War College on government and defense studies.

When working with students and professional colleagues alike, I aspire to achieve two goals in my tutoring. First, I seek to demystify the topic for the student, breaking the topic down into comprehensible chunks of information. Second, I use real world examples to highlight the points in the subject, because people more easily understand complex topics if it's within the framework of a relatable story.

Public Speaking

I have been trained in developing presentations and public speaking throughout my 22 year career as a research analyst. I also completed the training series with Edward Tufte, expert on the quantitative display of data as well. In addition to my professional career experience in public speaking and developing presentation, I am also a trained docent at the San Antonio Museum of Art, presenting to tour groups on a weekly basis since 2013.

Writing

I am a published writer in many different writing styles. I've written multiple research studies as a government research analyst for over 22 years (14 of which I spent as an analyst at the Center for Naval Analyses).

I currently write for the Rivard Report, a local, independent news service for San Antonio-- if you search for my name you will find my recent articles.

I also write for Edible San Antonio, a local food and culture magazine commonly available at Whole Foods and the Pearl Brewery Farmers Market.

I can work with you to address your specific needs. Whether it's writing for standardized testing or how to write a concise, compelling paper for school or work, I can show you how writing works.

More importantly, you will be able to apply these lessons to all your future writing. Become a better writer-- ask me to help, I'd be happy to show you how to write well!
