About Charlie

I've been helping friends and acquaintances with concepts and assignments for as long as I've been in school and as a Peer Coach + Research Assistant at UTSA Libraries I've had two years of 'official' experience as well. I'm very good at breaking down complex topics with analogies and I enjoy the challenge of coming up with new ways to think about topics to simplify or clarify them.

I've always been good at Math (when I was a kid I did lots of Math competitions) and Sciences, but I've also become a good writer and experienced music producer. I've recorded my friends' bands (acoustic/electric guitar, bass, drums, piano and vocals), produce my own music and do karaoke competitions.

I started off at College as a Chemistry major, so I'm very proficient with general and organic chemistry and I'm also an amateur programmer in C, Java and Python. I really enjoy helping people, and I have a light load this semester, so hit me up!

As a kid I did math competitions, so the arithmetic is strong in this padawan. I took Algebra in 6th grade, did very well, and have since been using it on the SAT and most recently on the GRE.
In high school I took AP Calculus AB and BC (scored 5 on both), and senior year I took Calculus 3, so I've been familiar with it for quite some time.

In high school I loved Chemistry, scored a 5 on the AP exam and went off to college as a Chemistry major. I've since changed majors, but I completed through Organic Chemistry 1 and am extremely knowledgeable with regards to AP Chemistry and college-level General Chemistry and Laboratories.

I've always done well on standardized tests, and the GRE is no exception: I scored 165/170 on the Verbal sections, and 163/170 on the Quantitative ones. I read a lot as a kid, so I have a strong vocabulary, I have good test-taking skills, and I've taken a GRE Prep course as well.

I love music. I've been making mixes for five years, and producing my own material for the past 3 of those. There is nothing more fun than playing around with melodies and chords, but actually producing a song takes a LOT of work and expertise. I've been taking Audio Technology classes for the past two years and am intending to pursue a Masters in Audio Engineering.

I've have a lot of studio experience with both analog and digital sound processing, analog & digital synthesis, microphone setup, recording, mixing/mastering and some live audio as well. I am proficient with the most common DAWs including ProTools, Logic Pro and Ableton Live and can help set up a home studio and recommend equipment based on intended use and budget.

I have a number of modular units in a Eurorack setup (sequencer, delay, compressor, quad-panner) that are great for demonstrating analog signal path, as well as an analog mono-synth (MicroBrute by Arturia) and an analog polysynth (Prophet 8 by Dave Smith Instruments)

I only have class on Tuesday/Thursday this semester, so I have a lot of time. Let me know, I'd love to help with whatever you're struggling with!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Macintosh

I've been using a Mac for the past six years now, and I've come to know almost all the keyboard shortcuts, connections and interface. I'm familiar with Mac software (Pages, Numbers, GarageBand, Logic Pro, etc.) as well as the touchpad gestures and their respective customization options. As a long-time Windows user (before I switched to Mac), I know the troubles and frustrations that many go through upon first switching to Mac as well as how to fix/overcome them. I'm familiar with Mac Utilities such as Disk Utility and know how to use command-line tools through Terminal. I've explored basic computer functionality on a Mac, and am well-versed in Music Production and Gaming on Mac as well.

Music Production

I've taken five Music Production classes in College and have been producing my own music for three years. Most of my work has been in a studio environment, but I've also done live mixing with 16 simultaneous tracks. I have experience with microphone setup, mixing/mastering, modular synthesis and signal path on both analog and digital consoles. I am very familiar with ProTools, Logic Pro and Ableton Live as well as many of the plugin suites available for those platforms, and I have a good deal of my own audio equipment to experiment with.
